F/U Thoughts on Combing These Names

One girl name DH and I both like is combing our grandmothers names, Mildred & Dona = Milona.  Thoughts?

Re: F/U Thoughts on Combing These Names

  • i don't love it. i don't hate it.

are you and H really into trying to name your children after family? is that super important to you? i don't get the whole thing but i could understand why it would be important. my cousin is naming her child after something her dad likes, and our grandma...

maybe it's because i have such a common name i want my children to have their own names.. i'm not going to name my children after family. i did talk to H about naming our first son with my maiden name as the middle name for the boy. Fox. :) I like it.

  • do you say it mil-oh-na or mil-ah-na?
BabyFruit Ticker BabyFetus Ticker we're having twins!
  • mil-ah-na.

It's not super important to name after fam, but I think it's a nice idea.  We'll at least use a family name as a middle name.

i like it much better pronounced milana instead of milona.

  • I agree with sarack. I don't love nor hate it. It's not my cup of tea but if you like it, I say go for it.

That's true.  Malana is a real name, which I like.  Maybe we should just do that...

and misspelled! Take it from someone with a name that gets misspelled and mispronounces a lot, it's not fun.

from someone with a very common name: I like it.  I think it's not crazy or really all that weird, it looks like it could be a name on it's own.  I also really like the idea of having it come from family names.  Although, I'll give my parents credit for giving me a really cool middle name, I just wish it was a name I could go by because ya, I really hate having a common name.

Agreed.  Could it be spelled Milonna so people wouldn't pronounce it with a long o?

    What about Madrona?

yeah, or it's how you take it.  I mean, my sister grew up with an uncommon and very beautiful name (which is now very popular), sure it was misspelled all the time and there weren't any souvenir keychains (lol), but I don't think she'd trade it for a common/boring name.

  • i feel ya amanda. my sister had the same situation as uw.. her name is mia. but she loves it and i with it was my name. lol.

ugh, it makes me so annoyed that my parents got creative with the second kid!  lol

this is all totally true, but let me tell you, as a kid (and sometimes now) I got really sad when my name wasn't on a piece of crap souvenir key chain.

This is what I'm going for.  I was Jennifer Marie.  Meaning there were 5 Jennifers in most classes in elem school, so it was Jennifer and Jenny and Jenn and Jenny A., Jenny B.  Awful!  Then my dad gets remarried & my step-sister is also Jennifer Marie.  My kids are getting unique (but not crazy) names!

I don't know about you, but I'm kind of attached to having my mom's maiden name as my middle and keeping my maiden as a hyphen. Especially learning more about my family history I knew there was no way that I would ever drop any of my family names.

I even told H that when we get a dog and if it's a girl I'm naming her my maiden name.

  • i guess it would matter more to me if i was close to my mom or gma.

i'm not. to either. i once was to my gma but never my mom. she gave up when i was 11 and i don't remember life before then.. becasue it wasn't good. anyway, that's a story for another time.

i really wish i had my own name.

agreed. I hate that it's my name vs. your name. I wish I were spanish and had the name smooshing tradition.

H and I would have had a pretty rad last name if we had smooshed our two names together. I honestly asked if we could and he said he wasn't down with that.

  • my middle name is my dad's mom's maiden name - my dad's parents died in a car crash when he was 14, so I never met them and I like having part of that family in my name

in kindergarten, i was jennifer lastinitial #2. and at work recently, i was jennifer.middleinitial.lastname2@work.com....

being a jennifer is ballz. i hate it. my married name is less common than my maiden name...so i got a little relief...but there are 3 jennifer maidenanames, in the seattle area, on facebook, roughly my age, and shares mutual friends with me. i get friend requests for these other freaks all the time Wink.

but my h's sister is also a jennifer.....so as of right now, there are two jennifer mylastnames. seattle area, etc etc etc. it's irritating when our friends write on the wrong fbook wall.

yeah, my kids will have you-neek names. (not really, just not "common" names).

    /rant over.

i liked the original name...molana (or something?) , but i liked the suggestion of mona better.

Crystal. NO, that's not my friggin' name!! Crys-tal like the ghetto-popular champange. No, we're WASPS!! I friggin' HATE that unless I move to France, 99% of the populace I run into will not pronounce it correctly...even after I repeat it for them multiple times.

And yes, as a kid, I was always sad that I could NEVER get my name on a pencil or pen or souvenir anything. :( Even the time my parents special ordered a cute tin red little mailbox with Valentine's candy in it, the company didn't paint my name on it correctly!

Back to OP, I think Mil-ah-na is a really pretty sound, but suggest you change the spelling to Milonna (but you will still have it mispronounced). If it's a middle name though, it's less critical for people to be able to easily spell/pronounce.

  • Oh yeah, to add, I half-jokingly said as a senior they would probably misspell my name on my grad announcements I ordered...and then they did. I was beyond pissed because obviously, they couldn't give me a new order to mail in time. They gave me the wrong ones "for free." Damn straight I wasn't paying for them, but what am I going to do with the wrong stupid name? Burn 'em.

If it helps, my first name is not very common, but there are two other women in the Seattle area with the same first name (same spelling), same middle initial, same (very common) last name, and about 10 w/diff MI.
