coffee may prevent depression?

Hallelujah. From the New York Times:

"A new study shows that women who regularly drink coffee ? the fully caffeinated kind ? have a 20 percent lower risk of depression than nondrinkers. Decaf, soft drinks, chocolate, tea and other sources of caffeine did not offer the same protection against depression, possibly because of their lower levels of caffeine, the authors say."

  • I am on my first cup of depression prevention, and I suspect there will be a second coming before noon.  (Second coming?  HA!  I amuse myself.  The coffee must be working already.)

  • Coffee restores my peace and sanity. That said, did you see the average age of the women in that study was 62.  I wonder if quantity of coffee consumed changes as you age because I am definitely in the 2 cup a day camp.
  • I missed the part about the average age being 62.  I think part of it is generational - my parents have a cup or two of coffee with almost every meal.  Most of my friends drink other things with lunch and dinner.  I think I drink less coffee because I'm not using it to wash down all of my meals.

  • I think that even going to the grocery store aisle and smelling the coffee makes me feel better :)  But I am in the 2+ cup/day camp since we have free coffee at work.
  • This is really weird because I was in the "no coffee" camp for so long and over the last few months started drinking it a few times a week and I swear that it just puts me in a better mood, so I figured what the heck I will just keep drinking it!  Now I have evidence that this is keeping me from going crazy!
