Australian Women to Serve in Combat in Afghanistan

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.

Re: Australian Women to Serve in Combat in Afghanistan

  • I'm not even sure what the argument against women serving in combat is anymore. It's not as if we have a traditional army with traditional fronts anymore. A woman who is deployable, can and often does end up in some form of combat. Banning them from combat arms seems rather meaningless.

I don't understand why it's going to take up to five years to train doctors to perform surgery on females though.

  • This article reminds me of a dinner party I once attended, shortly after I moved to the US.  I'd made some friends who were stationed at Fort Hood, and one of them was hosting.

One of the guys at the table, a tanker, found out I was Canadian.  He had apparently recently been on some US/Canadian joint training exercise, and he blurted out at the table that "you guys let females run your tanks!"

Let's just say I was confused...  I had no idea at the time why this was such a big deal.  I'm female, I'm in a male dominated profession (not military related), so I know that there is sometimes kick-back on women going into a male profession, but I have always had the mentality of "if a woman can do it, she shouldn't be barred from it".

I later learned about combat restrictions in the US military, and I'll admit they sadden me.  I still don't really understand why they still exist.  Yes, I can comprehend that there might be substantial physical requirements for some roles, and I can see a need for consistent requirements being established that either gender would need to be able to meet to be in those roles.  But, if a woman can meet them, and wants to take on that role, it just feels like a waste of resources to not let her do so...

I'm not saying that women should be forced into combart arms, I'm just saying I'd prefer to see the restrictions on them entering combart arms lifted.
