if you're one of the people who refers to them as "films", why? i'm not asking to be condescending, i just want to know.
i am also mildly annoyed by videographers who shoot in all digital but use the word "films" in their biz name.
Re: film vs. movie
The face of Kitty-Hate
I'm a nerd and think of "films" as being the old movies that were "filmed" (as opposed to digitally recorded).
But sometimes if something is particularly artsy I will call it a film whether I know how it was recorded or not. (eta - like if it should be featured at the Cannes Film festival or Sundance...)
PS - I think movie history buffs often call them films just like music buffs have a hard time giving up the term "album." I loved listening to music on vinyl records before cd's came out so I still call a new recording an album or even an LP and I'm having a hard time coming up with what the collection of newly released songs *should* be called.

I think I pretty much always say "movie." I can't think of an instance where I would say film outside of referring to a film festival, or a short film (you don't say short movie, right?)
MB - I would think that an album is a collection of anything (Iike a photo album). So for music, it doesn't matter if the collection of songs is on a record, a tape, a cd, or digital - it would still be an album.
what makes a movie a "film" = douchey hipster lingo
that's my theory ; )
album is different. they still have an "album of the year" award, and you can't really refer to the collection of songs by the media they're on because it can vary. i still use "album".
i always referred to vinyl as a "record".
