Doctors in Guatemala/Antigua?

Hi everyone. I'm new to the site. I just found out I was pregnant a week ago, but I haven't been to the doctor yet. I was just wondering if anyone out there lives in Guatemala. I'm looking for a doctor to go to preferably in Antigua, where I live. I would like a doctor who speaks English because I am more comfortable with English than Spanish, especially with technical words in stressful situations. If I need to, I will go to Guatemala City, but I don't have a car and don't want to take a bus when I have this morning sickness. Any suggestions?

    Congrats on the baby and welcome to the board! How far along are you? What brought you to Guatemala? I don't know anything about Guatemala unfortunately and I'm not sure we have any posters who are there right now, but what is the local expat community like? You might start with the ladies at work/your H's work/the local international school. Word of mouth is often a good way to find a doc even in your own country and especially abroad. Good luck!

    Thanks! As I said, I haven't been to a doctor yet, but I'm assuming about 6 weeks. We came to Guatemala through my student teaching, went home for a few months, and then we both got offered jobs at the school, so we're back! I know there are a lot of expats living here, but we don't really know many of them or how to find them. I'll start asking at work, though. Thanks for the advice!

    Great! What type of school is it and what do you and H teach? I am a 4th grade teacher here in the Boston area and both of my living overseas experiences (UAE and Korea) have been teaching jobs. This board is a bit slow on weekends and picks up during the European workdays so it should be more active tomorrow :)

    HI and welcome. I'd say asking through your school is the best way to go. You don't need to tell them why you're going if you don't want them to know you're pregnant. If they're hiring foreigners, I'm sure they're used to doling out this kind of advice all the time.

     It's a bilingual private school (not an International school). I teach Kindergarten English and my husband teaches high school English at the same school.

    DH (Guatemalan) and I are currently living in the US, but when he gets home I can ask him for his recommendations for Antigua-specific hospitals.  I know he's mentioned that there are many options for good, quality hospitals and some U.S. doctors living/working in Antigua. While in Guate several friends were pregnant (but gave birth in hospitals in the capital) and they all refused to take the bus until they were further along (too bumpy/dangerous).  Another idea though is to check with some of the language schools in Antigua about who they refer their students (U.S. citizens and Europeans) to when they've got health issues and see if these clinics have an English-speaking OB-GYN on staff (maybe?).
