Did you have to use the bed-pan once you were un-catherized or were you able to walk to the bathroom?

I have a fear of the bed-pan. Couldn't do it last time and am really hoping to avoid it this time, lol.

I never had to use one. As soon as they decathed me, they walked me to the bathroom. I was in some pain but not enough to not get up and go to the bathroom. They are more worried that you will be lightheaded.

That's actually why I had to last time, b/c I was so woozy I passed out on the way to the bathroom. I still couldn't use it, even when the nurse left DH and I in there alone. Peeing anxiety much? haha

The took the cath out as the last step before me getting up and if I remember correctly I had to sit up first to prove I could be upright. The first time they tried to get me up my legs were still numb so it stayed in until they were reasonably sure I was going to be getting up.

Random bed pan story:

I had a knee reconstruction my senior year of high school and got an epidural... and lots of other meds that made me say stupid things before I was "out".

Anyway, when I woke up, I asked the nurse if I said anything totally embarassing. She said there was nothing embarassing but that I did ask a LOT of questions. Then, however, she asked me if I remembered using the bed pan.

I wracked my brain and have a VERY faint memory of telling her I had to pee and then peeing in the bed pan, but it felt like a dream. Apparently it wasn't... so I have used one. Too bad you can't have laughing gas when in labor, then the bed pan wasn't so bad!

Like others, as soon as they took out the cath they made me get up and walk to the bathroom. I had my c/s at noon that day and they actually didn't take the cath out and unhook me from everything until the next morning. I had lost a lot of blood (usual complication when having twins) so they waited on making me get up and move around. Once they had me moving around I felt like a million bucks. So much easier to move around when recovering from a c/s than being 38 weeks pg with twins!

I remember something about having to have the cath in for 12 hours post surgery, but then the nurses who do that worked the AM shift, so since I had Zac at 1 AM, I had to wait until the following morning to do that ... like 30 something hours later. What ever, I just remember showering with it dangling there. Nice.

Either way, no bed pan.

The nurse and DH helped me get out of bed and she walked me to the bathroom, supporting me the whole time. The next few times I had to use the bathroom, I had to call the nurse for help out of bed and walking to the bathroom. At first they didn't want it to be just DH, not sure why.

Safety reasons. Hospitals are under the gun for safety and any events that occur in the hospital and could be prevented (UTI after catheter, falls, blood stream infections caused by IV lines /central lines, pressure ulcers from not being turned) are not being paid for.

So if you were to get up to the bathroom without help and were to fall and break something (ie. a hip in the elderly) or injure yourself in any way, that care related to the fall would not be covered by Medicare/Medicaid and most insurances. This would be a cost covered by the hospital, money the hospital just doesn't have to lose.
