Lawyers...question about emancipation

Does a 17 year old have to be emancipated to move out of their parents house? She is still in high school and wants to move out because her mom is mentally abusive. She has a job and goes to school full time. She is a really good kid but, is in a bad situation.

If she moves in with another adult or someone over 18 what does she havee to show the school? She turns 18 in a few weeks....would she still have to be emancipated to move out?

Thank in advance!

Re: Lawyers...question about emancipation

  • I'm not a lawyer.

My cousin moved out of a bad situation at 17 and in with my parents until she turned 18. She did not seek emancipation because she was pretty close to 18. She did have to jump through hoops to get enrolled in a new school district because her mom refused to sign paperwork. In the end, CPS got involved and a caseworker helped my parents get her into the new school.

    Good luck.
