here's another renovation question - when to paint?

We're down to the home stretch on the giant kitchen renovation.  We basically are down to flooring and painting and then finish/trim work on the cabinets and doors frames.  The tile has been ordered, but won't be installed for another 2 weeks.  DH thinks we should paint now before the tile goes in.  I think this is kinda crazy and always think painting is the last thing you do.  He said he'd agree if we were getting carpet, but since its tile, its NBD to paint first.  I'm not really sure why I think paint is last except that on the home reno shows its always last.  What do you think - would you do it now or wait until the floors are done?

We're hiring contractors to do both things - so its not really an issue w/ our time.

Re: here's another renovation question - when to paint?

  • We painted our basement before the flooring (mostly carpet, but there was vinyl tile in the bathroom). We just thought it would be easier because we didn't have to worry about dripping paint anywhere because it would be covered up later with flooring. It makes for one less thing you have to worry about while painting IMO. Though with pros, it probably doesn't matter as much.

  • Paint last. You don't want workers coming in and out of your house w/ boxes of tile, tools, etc. and freshly painted walls. Also tile installation can get a little messy- after everything is grouted they wet everything down a couple times and there can be some small splashes of dirty grout water that could end up on your walls, etc.

We had the upstairs of our house painted before we moved in and had our hardwoods refinished AFTER the painting was done- we were on a tight timeline and since the floors takes longer and has to be left alone for at least 48 hours or whatever had to do it that way.  We still have some small spots on our walls where a little bit of poly found its way up onto the newly painted walls, it's pretty impossible to remove, vs. latex paint drips come off a lot of stuff pretty easily if you get to them in time.

  • Also related to painting, I hate when those home improvement shows break down the cost of the project and paint always comes to $70 or something. We spent waaaaaaay more than that on paint and we didn't get fancy brands or anything.

I TIA with this- "good" not great paint isn't cheap, and good brushes and painting equipment are downright expensive!

  • We usually paint last, so I'm not sure if my answer helps you or not.

ha - yeah - $70 on paint, but $200+ on brushes, pans, drop clothes, ladders, etc., etc.

  • Ugh... we painted before the flooring and tiling to be done in the next 2 weeks.  I guess that was a bad idea.  I'm going to be extra careful.
