I really think I am burned out on teaching due to multiple circumstances and am looking for a new career. I am willing to go back to school (would prefer it) and teach until I am finished with a different license. I'm leaning towards a health field but would like something with stable hours, little or no call, and some flexibility. Less stress and more money than teaching are bonuses. FWIW, I am really regretting not going to vet school or optometry school at this point; I had the scores and the potential to do either, but chose teaching because it's what I thought I wanted.
Any suggestions for something you/a friend/ family member does that I should look into further or advice on the act of changing careers?
Re: Career Advice
I feel your pain. Both DH and I are getting burnt out this year. I think it has to do with having a baby now and still working 3 jobs, all of which are teaching. But there is just a funky feeling in my whole school this year. Everyone is so annoyed with CLASS Keys and all of the busy work invovled. Plus, our district launched a new program for grades, attendace, etc, and not a single component of it works correctly.
DH is going back to school next year to get his PhD. He will work in industry for a while when he's done (Nuclear Physics... we live close to a nuclear power plant) then maybe go back into teaching at the college level.
I wanted to go into the medical field before I was a teacher. I applied to dental school twice and always wanted to do that. I was wait listed, and after being denied 2 years in a row for no apparent reason (they straight up told me that they took people who were less qualified than me to fill quotas), I decided to move on.
I don't think I'd be as happy as a dentist as I am as a teacher. But there are days when I wish I didn't have to deal with all of the BS at work... I guess the grass is always greener.
I'm not sure what degrees you have as a teacher, but most entry level medical positions (that require 2-4 year degrees) pay about what a teacher with an EdS makes (at least around here). And you may have to work nights, weekends, holidays, etc. Just this morning, one of the local hospitals (Augusta is a HUGE teaching town for medicine because of the Medical College of Georgia/GA Health Sciences University) announced they are laying off 150 people. It's not a good time for medical careers because hospitals are broke.
Vet careers- I dunno. Not sure how much school you're willing to do. Vet school is WAY competitive (at least small animal vet school is). When I was at UGA, people were in my organic chem class so they could re-take it to get an A because a B wasn't good enough for vet school. I was happy I got out of that class with a C (the only one I made in college!). UGA has a great vet school, maybe you could look there?
I've heard that the best time to go back to school is when the economy is bad, so maybe it is good timing.
Sorry you're not happy, and I hope you find closure. Maybe you could switch schools/grades/subjects and see if that helps?
Life of mrsjanks
I'm so sorry you are stressed out
What about a medical position in an outpatient office like primary care as a mid-level practioner, medical office assistant, LPN, etc.?
There are plenty of options in the health field for you if you think that's something that you want to do. There's always the trade off of pay (this is a broad statement but you generally wouldn't make as much in an office setting as opposed to a hospital, but you probably would have a better balance). Even though we've scaled back due to the economy, we've never stopped hiring.
Sorry to hear it
If Vet or Optometry is what you want - why not do it? You're still young!
I have no idea how much training would be involved past what degree(s) you have but what about Ultrasound? Nursing? Speech Language pathology? My SIL is a speech therapist and works with kids with traumatic brain injuries (heartbreaking) but may be a way to stay working with kiddos, if you want, in a different way?
Sorry you are feeling burnt out.
I don't really have much advice- I can't think of anything in the medical field that fits your requirements. Nursing is probably the only field I would go into right now. Even though they are laying off, they still anticipate a shortage. TO be honest I can't think of a field that isn't laying off somewhere.
I always hear stuff about medical billing and coding. Not really sure about the prospects.
What about something in Community health like drug or alcohol prevention or education?

My new position is putting me a position where I'm working with a lot of Community /Public health advocates and it sounds interesting. The $$ probably isn't better than teaching but it can be less stress.
If you went back to school, could you then do vet or optometry? As you know, my DH has been in school for what seems like forever. He'll probably graduate at age 28, but at least it'll be in what he wanted. Then he has grad school! So it's not too late to switch careers and do what you want to do.
I'm really sorry teaching is so frustrating. I know you really care about those kids
