Mooorning?

Anyone here??

I had a 'friend' post something stupid on my FB last night, so:

QOTD: What are, in your opinion, the areas of the world you would tell someone to be careful in, if you heard someone was traveling there?

Re: Mooorning?

  • I'm here..  We're discussing whether or not we're going to be bothered cooking dinner, or if it's just leftovers.

QOTD: depends on the person I guess.  Off the top of my head, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, etc.

  • Morning!

Relaxing this morning and bringing M for his 3 year check up this afternoon.

QOTD: I'm curious what your FB friend posted.

I more of a "have fun!" person. But if I had to "Be careful!" someone about where they are travelling to it would be war zones.

  • Morning. I'm taking an Italian Cooking course tonight! I'm super excited. Best part is that it's a work event, so I'm not even paying for it.

QOTD: Definitely war zones, but really depends on the person. When I went to Johannesburg for the first time, I had people from the city warn me not to walk anywhere and not to take taxis off the street. To only use the ones the hotel provided, etc.  I appreciated the advice.

  • I'm here! :-) Busy at work but checking in during lunch :-P So glad it's almost the weekend! And I'm SO ready to relax at home tonight for once!!

QOTD: LOL, I had to check out your FB. I love it....yes, Dubai is on top of my list of dangerous places :-P I usually laugh that kind of stuff off to people being clueless, and categorizing it with the Middle East - which equals dangerous I guess. Soooo many people were concerned about us coming to Qatar. Meanwhile, it's safer than the US! (and so is Dubai).

I agree with pp - War zones, and most of the Arab Spring countries right now (although I heard it's a great time to go to Egypt) :-P

  • A girl from HS asked where I was going on vacation.  I told her Dubai.  She said, "Oh wow! Be careful..."

    It annoyed me.

    Sounds like so much fun!

  • Morning! I'm around kind of..

QOTD:  war zones (as mentioned above) and Mexico border towns.

I threw Egypt in there because of the hassle of being an American there.  We were stopped and questioned by guards every time we left the boat.  ALWAYS had to run my passport up to the immigration office.  When asked what the problem was, we got "an issue with the American Passport".  Yeah, my visas were in order, the only problem was it was American (I was traveling with Brits, South Africans, Dutch and Australian, mine was the ONLY one ever questioned).

I know several very liberal, anti-military, rather mouthy people who would NOT do well in Egypt.

  • Morning!

QOTD: war zones. And I might advise them to check on vaccinations, malaria pills, etc. before going to otherwise safe countries.

  • Morning! i'm trying to get over a cold right now, so just being lazy and eating ice cream for lunch, you know, the usual :) Tonight, we might meet some new friends for coffee or something.

QOTD: war zones make sense, I probably wouldn't get excited for someone telling me they were headed to Yemen or Syria right now. I laughed at the Dubai comment though. I have a friend who has been wanting to come visit and she said "I can't tell my mom, she thinks I'm going to get kidnapped or something" - she's 31, btw. Some people are funny.

  • QOTD: I think most people I know wouldn't need to be told where to be careful, because they don't just wake up and decide to go somewhere without doing some homework. Unless I had some personal experience that might help the person, I'd probably assume they knew what they were doing. But then I'm very literal, and I wouldn't say "be careful" when what I really mean is "I care about you and hope that you will be safe." And regardless of the meaning, LOL at your 'friend.'

I haven't actually been to Egypt, I just mentioned it because I know they're really hurting for tourism now, and I've read/heard the attitude towards Americans is much nicer now!

  • Snippy, I'm sorry about your friend. For a while we thought we were moving to Dubai. Two of my closest friends 'ganged' up on me and told me how they would never go there and it would be very dangerous. I was furious! I couldn't think straight. On of the friends went to her office and told them where I was possibly moving and 'how stupid I was for going'. This work colleague looked at her sideways and said 'why, it's extremely safe'. And then began to tell her everything about Dubai. She later apologized but still I was really pissed. I still get fired up about it to this day and this was over 3 years ago.

  • I mean, I get that for this girl, having a grand trip to Opryland is THE thing, but damn. People that I grew up with are not as um... worldly.... as they should be.
  • QOTD: I tell friends or family members when they come to visit me in Spain to be careful with their wallets/bags while visiting the city. I know this is a safe country but they do have some problems with pickpockets that they might not have back in their town in the States.

I think I see this issue a lot over on the Honeymoon board with Mexico. A lot of people dont feel safe traveling there. I think that if you are going to spend most of your time worried about your safety then you should probably choose another destination.

  • Oh man. Don't even get me started on the Honeymoon board.
  • It isn't morning anymore, but...

    QOTD:

    Mozambique
    See the scary stuff post.

    Johannesburg, South Africa

    Rio de Janeiro
I haven't left for Rio yet, but I've been hearing stories all week. It doesn't help that our office is right next to some of the most dangerous favellas in the city! But even the rest of the city is not that safe. When we talk about the possibility of moving to Rio, most people think it sounds awesome, but apparently it's very stressful because the crime is so high.
