Gas Heat

Does anyone have gas heat in their house? I'm looking at a house to buy and It was built in 1920. All the other major stuff has been updated, windows appliances, the shower. The description calls it radiant heat. I've just only ever used electrical heat, or been exposed to only electrical heat... does anyone have any feed back? They're big ugly things, but the rest of the house is amazing.... It's the only thing holding me back...

thanks,

Kelsey

Re: Gas Heat

  • I guess I've only had gas furnaces so what specifically do you want to know?  Your bills can be really high in the winter but super super cheap in the summer.

If you're worried about safety or something, just have it checked yearly before you turn it on like you would with any furnace.  If it wasn't safe, they wouldn't allow them in homes.

Also, what are you saying is the big ugly thing?  The actual furnace?  If it's hidden away in the basement, what does it matter?

    ^^

We have always had gas heat.  Not sure what big ugly thing you are referring to.  Our heater is in the attic so there isn't an eyesore in the actual living space.  As with pp, the gas bill is higher in the winter and practically nothing in the summer.  Our gas/electric average out to be about one sum because our electric is really low all winter, but really high in the hot summer.

  • I have radiant heat in my kitchen. It's in piping in the floor and can be turned on and off when needed. From what I understand radiant heat is cheeper to run because it is hot water which is heated by your burner. I don't know too much about this, I guess it's good that my fiancee is in heating. Sorry I could not help you out more.
  • I thought electric heat was more expensive than gas heat?  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm assuming by her saying it's "radiant heat" that she would have a radiator. Those can be ugly and space eaters.

That's what my parents always told me. Every house I've lived in has had gas heat. I had one apartment that had electric but it'd hard to compare the two to see which would have been more expensive.

  • Gas heat is cheaper than electric in most areas.

It sounds like the house has a gas fired boiler with  radiators .  A boiler lasts a LONG time (think 40-50 years) before needing to be replaced.

Ahh I missed the part where she said radiant heat.  Nevermind :)

This exactly. I have an older home, and last month my gas bill was $13.88, but in the summer, it can get up to $200.

    The pups!

Radiators are ugly and in each room. I had them in college and they get really hot, so I probably wouldn't with pets or young children.

I second this. My family's house has radiant heat and amazingly enough the two kids that lived there are still alive! i'm sorry i couldn't help myself. just put a nice cover on it and you'll be set. plus the cover helps the heat flow better apparently. sure its warm to the touch but we never had an issue in my house and if you put it in a cover it definitely should not be an issue.  my room was in the attic which was a dormer style. it didn't have good heat up there so i had my own plug-in heater... it ancient looking and in the radiator style and has always been the *best* heater!
