Interview Update

For anyone who commented on my questions about going to the interview yesterday, here's a thanks and an update!

I went in to the interview this morning at 11.  It took me about an hour to get there from my house.  Not too terrible, but not an ideal commute for a paid internship that's just 4 hours a day.  The interview went really great and the guy interviewing me actually seemed surprised when I said I was 8 months pregnant.  It was as if he hadn't noticed which either means I look fat or he did notice and I just look less pregnant than I am.

Like we all figured there is no job to be offered to me at this point since what they were interviewing for is a program they are piloting right now and it will run from Oct to December.  However, they said I fit the bill perfectly and they will be in contact next year if they are continuing the program (or they would like to hear from me whenever I feel I'm ready to start working).

All that said I wouldn't take the job anyway and probably won't contact them in the future.  What they are looking for seems to be an english teacher that they can hire as an "intern" but there's very little possibility of incorporating into the company in the future so I feel like they are basically trying to get a cheap, cheap (paid internship at 400 euros a month for 20 hrs a week) english teacher instead of going to an agency where they'd pay 30 euros an hour (or more) for a professor.  My thinking is I can find my own clients, charge 15-20 euros and work way fewer hours and make the same money.

I'm really glad I went though and if anything it was just a boost for me personally.  Thanks again for all the input yesterday!  You ladies rock!

Re: Interview Update

  • Good to know that the interview went well. It is crazy the things people try to do to avoid paying people a decent wage. I think though that we are probably going to see more and more intern contracts because of the crisis.

    Good Luck in the future.

  • Yay, glad it went well, even if you decide that it's not right for you.  I'm sure the man was just being polite and that you're adorable with your bump!  Maybe he took a lesson from TK,TN and TB NEVER to assume a woman is pregnant until she's in active labor!

That is shady as hell!  Boo.

And, as they say here, typical Spanish.

Let me know if you're interested in the auxiliares program or if you've got two years of teaching experience behind you. 400/month for 20hrs/wk is bologna when you can earn just below twice that for half the hours.

Private classes are much better :)

  • Glad it went well!
