strep, rash, bloodtests, oh my.

Ladies what am I missing? The girls are sick again. I've washed loveys, sheets, pillows, blankets on sanitize. Replaced the toothbrushes again. Sanitized all hard surfaces. What else?

This latest round has me very concerned as it involves a rash for Ana.

Three weeks ago we got this Rx burn cream stuff to put on a diaper rash that Ana has even though she wears panties, not diapers. That did not work at all.

A week later both girls have positive strep tests and antibiotics. Pedi peeked at the diaper rash and said give it more time and change more often. (uhhh she's not in diapers.)

Last week, "diaper rash" gets out of control - peeling, bleeding, etc. I took her to urgent care, they barely peeked at it and gave her nystatin for yeast. It helped some but then the rash really went nuts a few days later.

Three days after ending the antibiotic/one day after starting the nystatin the diaper rash begins to cover her belly, back, legs, and yesterday her armpits are bright red with rash and it's covering her face.

I did a little Dr. Googling and took her to the Dr suspecting Scarlet Fever (as a result of the strep) and they acted like they have no clue what's wrong with the kid and ordered every test imaginable. Strep came back negative. (for now - Katen wasn't seen and they tend to pass back and forth. We'll go back but K is complaining of sore throat again.) They took three vials of blood after poking the poor kid two other times not able to get blood.

I am so at my wits end. I feel like this diaper rash needs to be evaluated better and I can't figure out why my kids keep getting strep. I've cleaned and cleaned and cleaned, etc. They eat well. Katen sleeps well. Why?

Grasping at straws, is there anything you ladies can think of that I'm missing?  Any similar experiences?

No mother of the year awards will be sent to my house this year. :: sigh ::

Re: strep, rash, bloodtests, oh my.

  • Did they mention a possible allergy to the meds at all? That sounds exactly like how Jovie's penicillin allergy started. Starts in the warmest areas of their body. Just a thought. Benadryl could help if you are willing to try it. I am so sick of summer illnesses to! We need to get some drinks when everyone is better!
  • She ran a blood allergy test, but kind of dismissed a med allergy. I do think it's possible that the allergy could be to nystatin. The antibiotic had been finished for 5 days before the rash spread though (I was thinking it was 3 but it was 5) and she had it before she started the augmentin, although certainly not as bad.

The rash is tiny bumpy red dots with streaks of bright red on her neck, armpits, and groin area. It's made her skin very dryish feeling also. Is that kind of what Jovie's looked like?

I'll give the benadryl a try. None of the dr's have mentioned that. strange.   lol!

  • Hmm...Jovie's looked like a normal diaper rash at first and then that started getting worse. A few days later she woke up and it was dotty on her belly and a solid red on her groin and armpits. As it progressively got worse the rash got more solid red. Even after we stopped the antibiotics it kept getting worse despite the benadryl and once it spread to her face I freaked and they gave us a steroid so her throat wouldn't close and a way stronger antihistamine...still took 7+ days to go away :( I would definitely give benadryl a shot...never know...
  • At least that would stop the itching. :) Thanks!

  • A cool baking soda bath and calamine lotion helped Jovie a bit too! I wish I still had the pictures of Jovie, I would send you one so you could somewhat compare.
  • Does it look anything like this?

G had it last winter and we had to go back 3 times but finally they ruled it a strep/staff rash and gave her an antiobotic. It covered her face and body.

G had a high fever last week and started to get the rash again today. Of course, pedi wouldn't listen to me and said it was a rash from the fever. I'll bring her back when it continues to spread :-)

  • Also, can you go to a dermatologist?

  • I'm really no help at all, but wanted to ask whether or not you had them on a probiotic while they are on the antibiotics? I have terrible yeast reactions when on an antibiotic if I don't take a probiotic at the same time.

  • Have the girls been tested for/as a strep carrier?   When I was little I was a strep carrier and basically was sick more days than I was healthy.   It got really bad a few times where I had a staff infection on top of strep (per my mom's stories, I don't remember) and it sounds like maybe it's something similar.   They had to take my tonsils out at the first possible chance and oddly enough I have not had strep since (3 years old).   If if get REALLY sick I still do get staff infections (maybe once or twice in the past 10 years).   I would definitely see if they are a carrier at all.

It may also be a reaction to meds.   I thought I heard somewhere that you can be on antibiotics several times and then all of a sudden break out from it, even after the fact.  I have no personal experience with this...

  • I appreciate all of the ideas - thanks!

BP - close but not quite.

    Yes to the probiotics.

Both girls have been cultured and then recultured to be sure it's gone these last few times. Yet it comes back. I tested negative as well.

  • I'm wondering if its a group B strep infection.  I had sore throats and rashes A LOT growing up, but each time I was cultured it came back negative for the rapid strep test (strep A).  Turns out I had/have group B strep, which can present as a skin infection. It is becoming more and more common and because the girls have been on repeat rounds of antibiotics they may need a different family of meds to treat it.

  • Poor babies (especially poor Ana!)! Have they tested her for staph? Have they tried a higher order antibiotic? What I'm not understanding is how they're saying it's a diaper rash-isn't she potty trained? And if I were you, I would be 'that' mom that keeps at the pedi until you have answers.

  • If we don't hear anything back today, i'm going to head to the dermatologist. I'm done messing around with Dr.s who think my kid has a diaper rash when she doesn't wear diapers.

I'll have them check for StrepB (I know I'm often GBS positive with lots of strep myself as a kid, so that makes some sense), staph, and allergies.

I'm sure this sounds trivial to everyone else, but I'm worried about letting this go for too long.

  • Have them check for a staph infection - that will NOT come back on a regular strep test.  It's a special test they need to run.

I have no experience nor advice to share, but I just wanted to say that it definitely doesn't sound trivial... So sorry you guys are having such a rough time with this!  I hope they find answers.

Totally agree. Not trivial at all. Hopefully things are on the up and up soon.

  • If I can find my pics later I will send them so you can compare.  Cole was OFF antibiotics for a few days when he got an insane red rash covering his entire body.  My Dr. (who is amazing!) said it was possibly a reaction from the meds (my hubby is allergic to Pen.) but it was so horrible looking that I feared the worst (damn Google) and got a second opinion from my childhood Dr.. He said the same thing.  Not saying this is what the girls have but it was definitley scary and we couldn't go in public because even though he wasn't contagious he sure looked like it!  Hopefully you can get to the bottom of it soon!

Oh really? Well that kind of makes me feel better. If this is just a reaction to the antibiotic I would be so relieved. :)
