So I was just thrilled that we were moving forward and I calle State Farm b/c they handle our auto insurance and has for a while and they want a lot for the homeowners insurance. Not to mention we need to get flood insurance as well. DH's mom is looking into her place but can anyone else recommend a company? I can't believe the premiums on this! My mom had a larger house and her premium was much cheaper.
Re: Homeowners Insurance
PPs are right. Everything affects the price - I found out b/c we have this weird tower thing in our home (55 ft ceilings) - that affects the price, as does real hardwood flooring over laminate and granite countertops - be sure to compare since they do not affect your credit in checking.
I called 7 places. My current company was $500 more per year in premiums. 5 of the 7 were comparable for price of HOI along with replacement cost to rebuild the home and the other stuff (funds for living expenses, etc) definitely compare!
I understand different houses, states, etc. go into a premium but State Farm is trying to rip us off. IMO
I called another company, gave the same info and received a much lower quote..and a very low quote for our automobile. Sometimes it pays to shop around.

Man, I feel like i'm getting ripped off! Ours is 828/yr and that was the cheapest after shopping around. Yeah, I'm assuming that they are taking into account the size, the deductible, as well as our lender had specific requirements (such as it had to be a total replacement policy with 75% content replacement).
She didn't say it was $500, she said it was $500 more per year

Sate Farm is where we did our renter's insurance, but they had higher rates for homeowner's insurance.
We called Geico, where I do my car insurance. They gave us a lowest rate, and actually do it by farming it out to a third party company, Homesite. Whatever. I called around, it was the best deal and now I get a discount on my car insurance.

I just shopped for new homeowners' insurance this summer, because our Travelers' premiums were outrageous.
Our best deal by far was going to a local insurance agent and letting them shop for us. Our policy is underwritten by a smaller company (not like the big ad-budget companies like Geico, State Farm, Nationwide, etc).
I also got quotes from Amica (fairly competitive) and Progressive (not competitive).
