Possible relocation to Orlando, FL- need help!

My family might be moving to Orlando within the next year for an opportunity with my husbands career. We currently live in KY, and have two small children, 3 and 6. We LOVE Disney, so this is a potentially exciting move for us, but I am nervous about what I have been hearing about Orlando. Our children are in Catholic school right now, but we would be open to public school if they were highly rated. Can anyone recommend some good areas to look for housing? My husbands office would be close to the Orlando Executive Airport, but schools are a big consideration, as is staying out of the traffic. We would love to be close to Disney as well if possible. We like the idea of Celebration, and have visited, but not sure we couldn't get more house for our money elsewhere. We could spend up to about $350,000 for a home. Can anyone recommend areas for us to investigate as well as good catholic and private schools? We are planning a trip down in the next month or so, and would like to have things to set up to visit. It is so hard to try and figure out things not being familiar with anything except Disney! Thanks!

  • My husband grew up in Oviedo and recommends that area. Winter Park is another good one. Both are about 40 minutes from Disney, I think.

You can get a pretty great house for well under $300,000 now, thanks to the especially bad housing crash in the area, so you may be pleasantly surprised at how little you have to spend or at how much house you end up getting for the money!

  • We live just outside of Orlando and about 15 min to Disney in Davenport. It's not too close to the executive airport... 35 min commute prob. But it is a bit cheaper out here because it is still an up and coming area. We just bought a 4 bdrm 3000 sqft house for $125,000. The schools we are zoned for are A rated and we a 5 min from a new shopping center with a Target, Best Buy etc. I grew up in Orlando and by husbands parents are still near downtown Orlando and it is CROWDED. My parents live in Clermont which is also really nice with great schools. It is about a 40 min commute to downtown Orlando and about a 25/30 min drive to Disney.

  • I currently live in Clermont which is about 1/2 hour away from Disney. It's a nice little town - has a small-town feel, but we still have a decent amount of restaurants ans stores. Close enough to Disney, too - I know people that just drive there from Clermont for dinner or to go see the fireworks. Our schools are pretty good compared to other area schools - middle school has had an "A" grade since opening 4 years ago and a new high school just opened this year - very high-tech school. They don't have textbooks, but all of the students have their own Ipad instead.

If you have any ?s about Clermont, feel free to pm me - I'd love to help out. We live in a great new neighborhood (actually looking to sell our 3283sqft house in the future - love the house, it's just in the wrong state for us...lol)

    Good luck!
