F/U to "safe neighborhood"

We live in a safe area, but a few miles in one direction there have been a fair amount of break ins - mostly car break ins, not homes - like GPS devices and stuff stolen from cars parked in driveways or parking lots.

Anyway, a few weeks ago K's coworker was picking him up from work and parked out front - he called K, who was in the bathroom and said he'd be right down. I guess the coworker was sitting there for like 5 minutes, smoking a cigarette, and listening to the radio with the car running. He drives a really nice Accord and I don't think he is sketchy looking at all.

Anyway, our neighbor across the street came out of her house and knocked on his window and asked what he was doing there!!!

I am kind of embarrassed. K thinks it is because his coworker is Indian (he is dark skinned) and that our neighbor (who is white like 99% of the people on our street) was being racist. I think it was more that she saw my car not in the driveway so she assumed we were out and thought it looked sketchy.

So I figure I have an alarm AND Judy across the street, I don't have to worry.

  • Holy nosy neighbor!  I've been to your neighborhood, it's nice!

Not to mention IF he was a 'bad guy' what in the world is she doing knocking on his window?  Also, last I knew criminals don't idle in front of the house smoking a cigarette before the rob the place.

  • That's kind of how our street is. We are the youngest people who live there and quite a few of our neighbors are home during the day. Our immediate neighbors are home during the day and outside a lot. They also have 2 huge dogs who bark at strangers in their and our yards (unless we are out there, too). It really helps me feel better about being gone a lot and being home a lone a lot.

  • ha, that is good though for the neighborhood. I know there's a old guy next to our new house; hopefully that'll be good for us.
  • Oh I would be so annoyed.  I hate people in my business.

I seriously don't even talk to my neighbors unless I come face to face with them and pretty much have to.  I guess I'm snobby.

But - we don't live in a real neighborhood either.  It's a residential street, but the houses are pretty spaced apart.

  • I like feeling a sense of community and saying hello to the neighbors. I don't mind TOO much that they're nosy as I figure it will also help in times when we need them to be...

and yeah, what robber hangs out smoking before breaking in? I don't know. I was kind of mortified. The funny part too is that this coworker is of Indian descent but is from South Africa originally...so it's like he's an Indian African American! He has a South African accent and is, incidentally, kind of hot in my opinion.

  • LOL that's kind of funny and sad for K's coworker if your neighbor was stereotyping.

i don't either. C is all uber friendly with them. she blames it on where I grew up, which is sort of true, but has more to do with my parents being paranoid hermits than NJ :)

  • I like the sense of community, too. My neighbors aren't all up in my business, but we smile, wave, and say hi. Some came over and introduced themselves when we moved in (when we were outside) and we do the same for new people. It's nice to know names and faces because I think it does help keep everyone safer.

  • While it was really nosy of your neighbor, it also has to make you feel safe that she was looking out for you.

I sometimes get nervous being a young female, living alone with a small child. I live in a safe neighborhood, even though we've had a string of break-in's in the past. Not too long ago, the guy across the street (who is my age) noticed a black car that would park in front of my side yard (not in front of my house) around 10:00 every night. He told me that after 3 nights he went up to the car and told them they needed to leave or he'd call the police. When they came back the following night, the guy actually called the police! (I was at FF's for the weekend...and XH had DS) Turns out it was just some kids smoking cigarettes before they went home. They parked by my house so their parents wouldn't catch them....

It's nice to know people are still looking out for their neighbors these days!

I'm glad your neighbor did that. I've been walking out the mailbox and noticed weird cars driving slowly around our culdesac, stopping and staring at a house, etc. I usually stop, make a point to know the car and driver and stare them down. Just so they know that, yes, I saw them being creepy with my neighbor's house.
