I just saw the last episode. So at the end of the show future Ted says that he, Robin, and Barney won't always be fine or normal about hanging out together. What are your theories? Is it because Robin is still in love with Barney, and he starts dating the English chick? When future Ted talks about Robin he calls her aunt Robin. Does he call Barney uncle Barney or just Barney? I can't remember. It seems like it's going to be Barney who would leaves the group, if someone does leave.
Re: HIMYM 9/26
I don't think it necessarily means that someone leaves the group, but I also don't really get why Future Ted would say that the three of them hanging out in the bar "doesn't work." I don't get what that's supposed to mean ... they're single friends in their 30s, WTF are they supposed to be doing?
My only guess is that Ted distances himself from Robin a bit sometime in the future. I think they'll still be friends but they won't be as close as they were ... they won't be roommates anymore and they'll cancel the agreement to get married when they're 40 if they're both still single. I think The Mother's got to be cool with Robin being Ted's friend, but Ted's got to realize on his own that Robin can't be around him all the time anymore.
I don't think Nora (the English woman) is anything particularly special, but I'd rather Barney end up with her than with Robin. I hate how Robin only gets interested in Ted or Barney once he's with another woman. What happened to Independent, Globe-Trotting, Don't-Want-To-Settle-Down Robin from the beginning of the series?
All five of them are still friends at least 10 years later because of that flash-forward in the exploding meatball sub story where Barney fakes being on his deathbed to get Marshall to eat the sub. But I don't think they reference Barney in any future scenes aside from that, so maybe he'll split off from them eventually?
Ted, Marshall and Lily are still friends in the future because they go to their college reunion together. I know Lily had the flash-forwards of them as senior citizens on the porch together (when Ted was dating Laura Prepon from That 70s Show) but I don't know if that's supposed to be the real future or just her imagination. Robin is still friends with Ted in the future because Ted's kids drew pictures of Aunt Robin taking them to the zoo or whatever. And Future Ted's voiceovers say that they all have Thanksgiving together every year and that they all go to Robots vs. Wrestlers together every year, so I'm betting that nobody leaves the group.
Future Ted has referred to him as Uncle Barney a few times.
In the episode where they go to the robots vs. wrestlers match, doesn't Future Ted say that till this day (2030) it's a tradition for them all to get together, no matter what, and go to the robots vs. wrestlers match?
ETA: Clearly, I just skimmed your response. Opps. Forget I said anything!
I mean, he never really specifies WHO goes to Robots vs. Wrestlers, so Barney could be out of the group by that point. And the kids might not think twice about him saying "all of us" just means whoever they grew up knowing was part of the gang ... I imagine that their mother is part of that group, and probably Marshall and Lily's kid(s) as well. Wasn't Barney or Robin missing from the Robots vs. Wrestlers final scene?
I just can't imagine them totally ditching Barney as a friend, though, even if he willingly left the group. He can be a dirtbag sometimes, sure, but he's got redeeming qualities and he's come through for all of them at certain points when they needed help (example, getting Lily to come back from San Francisco). Plus, if they really thought he wasn't a real friend they would've dumped him way before 2011.
We can only hope. lol. Let's meet the damn mother already.
I love HIMYM but I think you guys give the writers too much credit in thinking that they have an enormous amount of continuity in the storylines.
Two things I have picked out easily that have been contradicted...
1 - When Marshal's car is dying, we see that Barney hates the car because he tried to learn to drive and can barely drive in the parking lot and freaks out because he 'almost' hits a dog (doing 5mph). In a later episode, we see Barney speeding and trying to get speeding tickets to prove he can get out of them. Granted, he could have learned to drive since that but...
2 - Episode where Lily is at the bar with Robin and she takes off her wedding ring in an attempt to have guys hit on her. Marshall shows up and thinks he has to beat up the guy he thinks is hitting on her. Turns out, he isn't hitting on her and he is relieved because he has never been in a fit before. In a later season, Barney and Ted get into the fake fight in the alley with 2 guys from the bar. Marshall ends up taking care of business and they show how he used to fight hardcore with his brothers all the time.
I know it's just 2 examples, but they have really stuck with me. I don't feel like the writers have had much of a plan for the future since the beginning and try not to look too much into any future flashes because of this.
