random house question
if you have a ranch/first floor bedrooms - do you ever open your windows at night? except for college I have never slept on the first floor and I'm all paranoid about robbers (the neighborhood we're buying into is pretty safe, but still...its metro NY, 3-5 miles from anywhere is the 'hood).I might get some of those window lock thingies, but I'm not sure how well they work.
the counterpart to this - do you set your alarm (if you have one) at night?

We have one bedroom on the first floor but it's the guest room. if I slept in there, I would be OK with opening the windows (probably from the top though) because they're still pretty high off the ground (in the back, the bottom of the window is about eye level).
We do not have an alarm, but if we did, I'd probably set it at night (we had an alarm growing up and my parents still have one and they always set it, so that's what I'm used to). Tim would probably think it was unnecessary, but I wouldn't care
We don't open our windows. We have a security gate that the previous owner installed on our sliding glass door in our bedroom so we open that but if we didn't have that we wouldn't open it.
We set our alarm.

We have a ranch. Our bedroom is in the back of the house, with a fenced in yard. We leave them open at night with no worries. The other two bedrooms are on the front of the house and we don't leave those open when we are sleeping or gone. I would leave the other windows on the back and the one of the side of the house open at night or when we are not home, but Matt is paranoid about it.
Our neighborhood is super safe.There was a string of burglaries last year in nice neighborhoods. Never ours, but some around us. They were never when people were home, though.
I figure that if they use one of the windows in our privacy fenced in yard to get in, then they were determined to anyway (because they would have to be seeking it out to see them). Leaving the ones on the front open is more inviting because anyone can see them from the street (although, since we live on a culdesac, we don't get much random traffic).
ETA: We don't have an alarm. Matt has mentioned it, but I don't think we need one. I'm too cheap and I feel really safe in my house.

We have a colonial and we're on kind of a hill, so the only windows that you could MAYBE get into from the ground are the front windows that are in the living room - BUT, that would mean all the world could see you do it, and you'd have to get over some nasty hedges. I think really you'd need a ladder to get in otherwise...anyway, we do leave those windows open during the day when we're gone, partly because I don't think anyone would try it, partly b/c we live in a safe neighborhood with people home all day on all sides of us, and partly because we have an alarm that we are diligent about setting.
Oh wait - we do have a walkout basement with a ground-level window into the basement. However, both the door and that window are alarmed and we never leave either open unless we are IN the basement. And again, we always set the alarm.
I grew up in a ranch style house, we always had the windows open at night. Most of the bedroom windows opened to the back yard. But my mom always left the front windows open too.
Now, even though Craig and I are in safe neighborhood, the bedrooms are upstairs, we close the window in the front when we go up to bed. Our window in our kitchen is technically on the 2nd level so we will leave that one open.
