Help! How do I make this?

My close friend's 30th bday is coming up and I had this cheesy idea of making her some kind of framed thing with 1 or 2 pictures of the 2 of us from when we were first friends in high school, and then a picture or 2 from nowadays. And then some sort of phrase about how we've been friends for 15 years, happy 30th, etc. How do I make something like this so that it looks pretty, and she might actually want to display it on a desk or something? I am bad at making my own homemade creations look sleek and professional. They usually look like a 10 year old made them.

So how would you go about designing this? Does it need to be completely made online and then printed out so that it looks its best? Or can it be done in a more handmade way, but still look good?

Thanks for any suggestions :)

  • Something that I envisioned when I read this:

Use a deeper frame or even a shadowbox so you have some room, attach a nice fabric (I kind of picture something textured- like burlap or something) to a piece of cardboard that fits in the frame for the background, then attach the pictures to the background kind of offset or crooked with those little map tacks. Maybe the two old ones on top and the two new ones on bottom. Then print out your saying on nice cardstock, cut it down to size and attach it in the middle or bottom as a banner type thing. Does any of this make sense?

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense and that's a nice idea! Thanks so much!

  • I really like Pink's idea, but my craftiness starts and ends with paper, so just to throw something else your way, I see something similar (I think) to what she's saying, and probably around the same size.

To keep it simple you could find a frame that has 4 openings, and dress up the mat with your sentiment.

Or, I pictured something 12x12, like a scrapbook page that could be framed by itself. I think I gave DH something like that once. I plucked a few sketches off Pinterest:

You could use this sketch and put pretty paper in those middle spots. Or sentiment in one, pretty paper block in the other.

This is a 2-page layout, but it gives you an idea of what I mean by that.

And the pretty paper in that layout is Cosmo Cricket's Clementine. (The link is to the collection, but you'd buy it by the sheet, either online or at a scrapbook store.) Crate Paper's Portrait collection would be perfect, too.

I'm sure you could find really nice paper at Michael's or Joann's, too. Or you could find some in my stash, and I have all the tools, too. Just bring wine. Let me know Smile

  • Thanks Kate! I'm gonna make a note to look at your post tonight at home, to see the pics. (can't see them at work, lol)
