CD Question: Ammonia Smell
Is that something that stripping will get rid of?
And, tell me how you strip. I've been adding Dawn to my regular wash cycle then rinsing a ton but it doesn't seem like it's helping too much. The ammonia smell is terrible when he's peed in them but I can still smell it even when they're freshly washed.
Gotta run, so TIA!
Re: CD Question: Ammonia Smell
What detergent do you use?
For stripping we do a squirt of blue dawn and a little bleach (inserts, but sometimes we do covers too).
I have used funk rock and seems to help.
ETA: I am thinking about trying the BG diaper spray to help combat toddler stinky diapers that you spray on before you put in wet bag / pail.
Also wanted to add I ditto the more detergent. What kind of water do you have? We were having issues, but realized we had soft water (city water) and had to get the soft formula and it really helped.

Our stash is so completely messed up that I probably don't do it "correct", but it works for us. I save the Dawn for when they're repelling, put it and all the diapers in the bath tub, swish, wring, soak, repeat.
For the amonia smell, I actually just add more detergent, then do a no detergent cycle to rinse it all out. If the smell is still there and only on the inserts, I'll wash just them with a little vinegar.
I will soak the diapers in detergent overnight, then finish the cycle in the morning, and do an extra rinse.
I actually use a full scoop of detergent (I use Tide Free & Clear on mine) every time I wash my cloth diapers, and then do an extra rinse. We don't have ammonia issues too often. I have found that the small amount of detergent that is recommended to be used on cloth diapers just doesn't get them clean enough. So that's why I started using the full scoop, but then added the extra rinse to make sure all the soap is out.
I think Katie is right on, especially when it comes to toddler pee. I took her advice and our dipes are getting better (except for the BGs- blah!).

Yes, I think this is the key. Toddler pee is POTENT!!!!!
This is what I do too. I may be wrong, but I associate Dawn with getting grease out, so when you accidently get non-CD friendly diaper cream on the dipes or something that is causing repelling.
I'm too scared to put dish soap in my washer so I only do it in the tub.
When I have ammonia stink, I assume it's from detergent build up so I either do a lot of hot rinses with no detergent (after the diapers have been cleaned with detergent). Sometimes I add some bleach to the rinses. If they still stink then I switch detergents. I find that a detergent works great when I first use it and then over time is seems less and less effective so I switch to a different brand and it works great again. I notice the same thing with shampoo.

I used Charlie's Soap - but it stopped working, so I went to RnG, which was great for a while. But I have since found that the Tide works just as good if not better than the RnG for toddler pee.
We use that for our clothes, so I'll give it a try first! Hopefully that's the answer. Toddler pee is gross.

How come I thought that you couldn't use Tide (even the Free & Clear) for cloth diapers? Hmm. Good to know.
When I notice a lingering stink, I usually add some extra detergent, and also bleach (color safe, obviously). They always come out nice and fresh after that.
Toddler pee is no joke. When I am emptying her pail into the washer, I have to hold my breath. The ammonia will burn the nostrils!
