Cell Phone Help: Sprint HTC Evo 4G / T-Mobile HTC Sensation 4G

I have had the same Palm Treo since 2007 and I'm looking to upgrade to an android phone. DH doesn't like his phone so he will probably upgrade too. However, I have never had a droid so I don't quite know how they work. I was hoping that some of you can help me out with understanding whether the two phones in the subject will meet my requirements (I choose them because they both get high ratings). I know I can go to the store and ask about the features but in the past, they have told me things that weren't true so I would like to ask actual users of the phone. Any and all advice is appreciated.

DH's Requirements

Sync with Outlook email, calendar and contacts

If he can also sync with AOL, that would be nice too.

My Requirements

Sync with Hotmail (and not through a web browser on the phone but with some sort of app)

Sync with a calendar and contacts system. Currently, my contacts and calendar sync through the Palm application. I would need something on my desktop where I can see my calendar and contacts and have it sync through my phone. The person at the store said I could do this with Google but I'm not sure how that works.

Have the ability to create memos or lists that sync with something on my desktop computer (so that I can see the lists on my computer as well). This is how I manage my to do lists, shopping lists, etc.

Have the ability to text with DH but not have a texting plan. My friend said you could do something through Google text where it doesn't really count as a text because it's through an app?

***************

The reason I'm debating between Sprint and T-Mobile is because I've been with Sprint for 11 years but if both DH and I upgrade to droids, our base bill will go from $75 to $150 with Sprint. That's an extra $900 per year which I will not pay. So, that is why I'm considering TMobile because then my bill would only go up to $99 per month. So, I'm going to call Sprint and give them the opportunity to give me a "deal" otherwise, I'll switch to T-Mobile.

  • I have a HTC Evo and also upgraded from a Palm Treo.  I'm able to sync with my hotmail and gmail accounts. It only makes updates from hotmail to the app, not the other way except if you delete the messages.  My contacts are saved through goggle and can easily be accessed online. Not sure about the calender though.

All in all, I really like Sprint.  I've had a couple of friends who have had spotty coverage with Tmobile, plus if I remember correctly I believe they are going through a transition (service could get better or worse).  I was however able to negotiate with Sprint and received a years worth of bill credits for keeping them.

Thanks so much for the info. I'm glad to hear you were able to negotiate with Sprint. That's what I'm hoping for. I would rather stay with them for convenience and since I know the coverage is good in places where we need it. However, I'm not going to for an extra $900 per year. That's just outrageous. Hopefully I can get a manager on the phone and talk them down on price.

  • I have the HTC Evo Shift and my Husband has the HTC Evo.  I am a fan of it.  I know that my husband does sync his Outlook calendar and his phone calendar together, and I believe he could have his Outlook e-mail synced to, but doesn't because it his work e-mail. My DH has Hotmail, and I have google and yahoo e-mails all on my phone, and you go through the login process as a an app type thing, without it being through a brower.

One way  to text without being through the text messages is through Google Talk, it's an app already installed when you get the phone.  It works great, and it's like AIM from back in the day.

I am not sure about the memos, because I have never needed that function, but I am sure there has to be a way.

Let me know if you have any other questions.  I love my phone, as does my husband.

  • No problem!  The negotiating was painless and I didn't even need to speak with a manager.  I just told them, that I needed to cancel my service because I was trimming my budget, etc. and the representative took it from there.  GL!

Cool. I just want to be truly ready to cancel so that I can really negotiate with them. Hopefully it will work out.

Thanks. It looks like it will meet our Outlook/Hotmail requirements.

Yes, and Google Talk is what I was referring to. That's available on all of the HTC phones? That's what I want because my BFF has it and then if DH has it, those are the main two people I will "text" which will save me from having to add true texting to my plan.

For the memos, I can potentially just use a "Contact" for my memos and put my information in the notes section. So, that may not be as big of a deal.

I believe so, given that the HTC are on the Google platform they should all have Googe talk either on the phone already, or at the very least, have the ability to be downloaded for free from the Droid Market.

E-mail may also be a way to do it for the lists, if you just type an e-mail and then send it to yourself.
