Federal dental plans - do you like yours?

I think open season is coming up soon, and I'm looking at dental plans. Do you like yours? Do you think it's worth the cost of premiums? Have you been able to use it to cover more than just general cleanings? I'm all ears!

Re: Federal dental plans - do you like yours?

  • Nope. To all of your questions.

We have BCBS and we had to get supplemental dental.  I think it's with concordia now (we previously had metlife, but that sucked)... of course, neither of us have had to have anything more than cleanings since we got the better supplement. Figures.

But, for the extra (i think $71 a month) it's better to have it and not need it.

  • I'm no help. Last year, we looked at my dental options during open enrollment just to compare to my husband's and decided that the fed plans absolutely suck.

  • We have the Aetna Healthfund for medical and it includes dental.  Cleanings are covered, and I didn't pay anything for my wisdom teeth removal.  I think it's a great plan and it's on the cheap side.
  • We got MetLife last year just to help cover my wisdom teeth extraction (general anesthesia = $$$) but will cancel it for next year. MetLife was better than whatever my company has.

Are you expecting any expensive dental work to be done? If it's just for general cleanings and x-rays, it might not be worth it. I think it totally covers two appointments in a year (must be exactly 6 months apart) plus normal annual x-ray (I think it covers a panoramic x-ray once every other year), but I remember pricing it out and found it to not really be worth it if that's all you need done (especially when my silly husband doesn't go to the dentist like he's supposed to!!!).

  • We have MetLife High - they have a standard plan as well.  I may be in the minority here but I think its worth it.  I've always had soft teeth from being on well water all of my life and have had several fillings redone, 3 root canals, a gum tissue graft and a crown done since having them and I've only paid 20% or less of what it would had cost.  Really it just depends on if you really have teeth that don't require a ton of work and just go for cleanings every 6 months.

  • I agree with Jitterbug. We also have MetLife High. I've had Metlife for years and I've been really happy with it so far. My teeth are pretty healthy and don't require much outside of cleanings. DH's teeth are horrible and it's always something when he's at the dentist.
  • Thanks for the responses.

I may need to get my wisdom teeth removed at some point, so some coverage for that would be good. I also need x-rays, and while my regular health insurance pays for cleanings, I think I had to pay for x-rays OOP the last time I had them done. So I guess I'm looking for something that's a little bit more than bare bones coverage.
