Laptop suggestions for crafty people?

I am in charge of purchasing a new laptop for my sister for her birthday (she does not want a desktop).

She mostly scrapbooks and uses some programs (not sure which).

What type of specifications should I look for or include? How much memory, disk space? Any ideas would be appreciated!

TIA!

Re: Laptop suggestions for crafty people?

  • In general I think Mac is a good choice for art things - a Macbook Pro would have plenty of power
  • Another vote for anything MAC.  Best investment(s) we've ever made.
  • You might want to make sure what programs she uses. I know some programs are not compatible with MAC yet but there might be a way to use them on a MAC and I am just not smart enough to figure it out.

Example: I have Cricut Design Studio and it is not compatible with MAC, so I still have to use my PC if I want to use DS.

MAC are great and I have the new MacBook Pro and I really like it and I never thought I would care for a MAC computer

She does use Cricut Design Studio.

  • yeah, the CDS isn't compatible with Mac, although I think it says on the website that eventually they will make one.  It's pretty ridiculous because all other design software works with Mac (and Mac is even considered better for that kind of stuff).  If she has a PC that she can use the CDS on, then I'd still get a Mac and hope they figure it out soon because I just think Mac computers are more powerful and last longer.
  • If she's just using software for scrapbooking and for her Cricut, a Mac is completely overkill for that. I use Illustrator and Photoshop and that's why I have a Mac myself (and it's still overkill since my H got me a huge one).

Get something with plenty of memory (RAM) and a nice graphics card. I know there are some processors that are nicer than others, but I couldn't tell you which is which. My H is a computer geek so I let him pick stuff out for me instead of trying to remember it all.

I had a HP before I switched to Macs and it wasn't very nice. My H has an Acer and he loves it. Trust me, he's on it constantly and though he did some upgrading on it when he first got it, he's happy with it.

I would post on the Gadgets & Technology board for more specific recs.

I wouldn't consider this an accurate statement. If you get the right PC, with the right specs, you can make it last awhile. But computers require maintenance (like defragging, etc.) to keep it running fast. A laptop off the shelf at some big box stores will come with minimum RAM and disc space. Upgrading RAM solves slowness issues down the line.

When he gets off from work, if you want, I can ask him to give me some specific ideas re: what kind of specs you want or even some computers that would work well.

Do you know what kind of software she does use?

ETA: H says get her an Intel Core I3 processor with at least 2 GB of memory, 4 preferrable and 8 if you can get it (more RAM -- the memory he's talking about -- will make it run faster. My Mac came with 2GBs and we upgraded me to 4GBs so it would function while running both Photoshop and Illustrator).

He said that Buy.com had a nice Acer just like his that had a slightly smaller screen and without a dedicated graphics card for $500 (An Acer Aspire AS5750-6438 is the model). It has an I5, which is the mid-tier processor (they have I3, I5 and I7, which he doesn't recommend in any laptop because it runs too fast for a laptop). He would avoid any AMD processor, he doesn't think they've kept up with the competition.

    HTH.

Ok, so I don't have a Mac (and have never had one) but I do know that you can run Windows on a Mac. It requires some tweaking (and people much more computer savvy than myself), but I know someone who can run Mac and Windows side by side simultaneously on their Macbook. So it's definitely worth looking in to if you are buying a Mac.
