Re: Credit Unions
I used to belong to Michigan First CU and was always happy with them.
However, you could join anyone and be fine. Unlike banks, credit unions don't usually have multiple locations. Instead, they have service centers which provide basic banking services for most credit unions. I used to go to a service center right off of John R in Troy when I worked in that area. There is also a service center on 14 Mile near Stephenson Highway.
Here is the link for the locations of the service centers which will help you determine if there are locations close to your normal stomping grounds:

I have DFCU via the "merger" of Midwest Financial. In comparison, DFCU is not my cup of tea. They handled the merging of MWFCU customers very poorly.
They have a few silly fees that I would compare to Banks (if you go under 200 in a savings account you're charged a fee. In this economy charging someone for not having 200 on hand is totally unethical IMO). They keep talking about how they give you a part of some dividend at the end of the year, but they charge enough small fees just to manage your own money that you're not really getting anything you didn't already have before they charged you for silly crap. IMO
BUT, if they're the only game in town, go for it. They're not all that bad. I've just had better. (i've never used a bank btw). they have a ton of branches throughout MI though, especially since they seem to absorb other community CUs.
H has had Royal Oak CU for a few years and he likes it- idk if they have a branch close to you in Troy. He's not as critical as I am though, because he came from BOA.
