Applied for a job, need help responding

I applied for a job last week. Gave them a cover letter explaining why I want the job, how I think I am qualified, etc. along with my resume and references.

I got an email back today "clarifying the nature of the position" and explaining its associated duties. They want me to write them back an email that explains how I am particularly qualified for the position, and how it fits in with my personal career goals.

1) Didn't I already do that in my cover letter? The position announcement was not unclear. It listed the duties and I addressed each of them in my cover letter.

2) I am overqualified for this position. Are they trying to hint at that? It is a job I would enjoy and is within my field.

3) My career goals have been changing a lot lately since I've applied for a few jobs and have not gotten any offers. Do I mention this evolution or stick with "this is what I've always wanted"?

I haven't encountered this kind of thing before, so any advice would be appreciated.

  • Even if it's a bit redundant, I would just explain clearly again why you are qualified for the job.  Mention specific skills that align with specific responsibilities outlined in the position.  Talk about the aspects of the job that interest you, and focus on your future and current career goals as they would apply specifically to this position. 
  • 1)  You probably did do this, but either HR didn't catch it, or they want you to know the exact job requirements so there is no confusion if you get the job.

    2) They problem know this, which is why they are asking you question 1.  I would explain this to them when you respond.

    3) I wouldn't tell them that you've been interviewing other places and haven't gotten an offer.  This might raise a flag.  If I were a hiring manager I might wonder why you've interviewed but not been offered a job, especially if you are my best candidate.

  • 1. It may be their policy. They may have been burned with the wrong employee for the job before. Or a host of other things. I wouldn't continue to focus on the CL, I'd just send them what they want

    2. Maybe, but it's tough to know. See #1

    3. Neither
