Debit Card Usage Fees

Did anyone hear about this? Not sure how true it is, but WTF?! What is the point of the debit card if i can't use it to make purchases (without being charged a fee). I'll just use my non-bank-affiliated credit card. But seriously?

The down side is that we usually take cash out when buying groceries for the week but can't if we don't use the debit card.

Lame.

Re: Debit Card Usage Fees

  • are you kidding me? this could be enough to switch banks for me (except all our stuff is linked through there and i dont know if i can be bothered......this is a nice cash cow)

I dont have an issue using my cc instead but still, grr.

I almost lost it today with them. I spent an hour trying to wire $ for my closing online. I couldn't do an internal transfer (my atty is also w BOA) because its a business acct. I can't wire it b/c its an internal account. Now I have to go 5 miles out of my way to a banking center open past 4 and get a GD cashier's check. I am so mad.

  • WTF.  I actually don't use my debit card much, but I do use it a lot at the grocery store when I need cash back.  Guess I'll have to stop doing that and drag myself to the ATM more.

  • We have the Prima account with BofA so I hope it doesn't affect us.  That blows though.  All we use is our debit cards.

It's why we use a local bank. They couldn't get away with this stuff. That's a pretty ridiculous fee.

  • I might get a local bank for ATM/debit, but truth be told I don't want to give up my national bank. It is nice to have for deposits on the road, etc. I've moved around a lot and can't imagine what a fiasco it would have been to change banks every couple of years.

Ditto.  Though we have no intention of moving, I love having a bank that I can access basically anywhere.

I'm mostly annoyed at this because like Holly, I tend to use my debit card at the grocery store when I need cash back.

I concur. I have BoA because I don't work close to home. So it is extremely convenient. We also have a ton of online bill pays set up through our account, which is a lot easier than having to go through each company's personal website.

I don't have to use my debit card for purchases, but if I'm getting some inexpensive, like CVS or food at Panera, it just made sense. But we get points with our credit card, so that's a plus. Now we won't be able to take out money at the store and will have to add an extra stop.

  • From the resident banker....

To be honest with you all, I think this will become mainstream across the board, maybe fees will be a little lower at some banks, but because of Dodd-Frank and the costs imposed to banks to comply with the credit/debit card provisions, banks have to make their money somewhere.

You might check out a local credit union once this starts to ramp up, they might offer some cheaper options.
