Re: did you get your agent a gift?

  • Our agent got a very nice check!  If she had been really phenomenal I might have gotten her a gift card somewhere, but she wasn't (she actually was pretty difficult).  I think I'd be more likely to do a gift if I was the seller.

  • No. She sucked and her commission was far too generous IMO.

  • As much as we love our agent, we'd initially decided the big fat commission is gift enough, however under the circumstances (see my post below re. crazy neighbor that's impeding our sale) we will most definitely be getting her at least a little something- probably a giant bottle of booze, lol!

  • When we finally close we are going to send her a big pretty bouquet of flowers. We love our realtor and she was recommended to us by my best friend. She also sent her flowers after her closing.
  • We'll send our agent a gift. I'm not sure what yet but we have been overly picky buyers and looked at about 30 houses so far. She's gone over and above what we've expected of her.

  • We wrote a nice referral and they got big fat checks.
  • We loved our agent and she fought hard for us.  We gave her a GC to a local restaurant.

  • Yes, 3% check and positive reviews.

  • I loved my agent! We got her a gift basket of cookies and I took her out to lunch after the closing.

  • We've only sold (haven't found a house to buy yet) but for our agent we got her a bottle of wine and bought her office a cake from a popular local bakery as a thank you.  She did an amazing job in a very tough market and we just felt like she went above and beyond.  When we originally bought the house we sold we didn't give the agent (different agent back then) anything but we did receive something (gift card), which is pretty customary in my area.

  • Our agent was expecting his first child a few weeks after our close, so we got him a gift card to a local baby store.  He kicked ass, and we really liked working with him.

I don't understand why people are saying they gave a "gift" of a check.  That was how you paid.  A gift is something extra.  Just say you didn't want to give a gift.

  • We loved our agent. We got her an edible arrangement :)

She came to our housewarming party last weekend and insisted on bringing food. She brought jerk chicken, a dozen cupcakes from a nice bakery in town, and gave us a lowes gift card. It was awesome having her there and she hung out for about 2 hours and got along really well with our friends.

  • Her comission was her gift, LOL.  Seriously, though, we sent her a nice card thanking her and telling her if anyone we know is looking for a realtor we will recommend her.

  • My and my mother have a company making reuseable grocery bags and other fun things, we made my REA a set of matching grocery bags and her two little girls coloring book bags with coloring books and crayons.

My REA was beyond amazing, she's been with me for 9+months and is still emailing me to make sure everything is ok and that we are happy.  I'm sure she'll stop by in a few months to see what we've done with the place.

  • My realtor is also amazing but I am not into gifts to realtors.  It is their sole job to buy/sell homes.  They get paid.  I have given a testimonial for my realtors web page and recommended at least 5 other people who have bought from him.  More money and commission is the gift that keeps on giving.  To me this is business and not personal.  The realtor in the end generally gets you a gift as a client (ours got us a gift card) and not vice versa.  Each time I refer a client that buys a house to my realtor he either takes us to dinner or will donate to my favorite charity as a thank you.

See, I don't see it as "it's his/her job, he/she gets paid, no need to do anything more for stellar service."  When I was in the hospital delivering my son my DH brought the staff/nurses bagels and a fruit platter.  The nurses were just doing their job but we felt they were going above and beyond and we wanted to give them a small thank you.  After my OB delivered our baby, I brought her office an edible arrangement as a thank you.  I give my trash collector and mailman a small cash gift at Christmas each year.  I tip at many places where a time is not expected but is often appreciated.  Just because someone is "just doing their job" doesn't mean you can't reward them for service that is extraordinary.

  • I don't think its fair to compare nurses to real estate agents. There are huge differences between how those two industries operate. It's not like a review on yelp will convince you to asked for a certain RN... because really, you can't do that.

OK, how about a doctor?  I gave my doctor a gift after she delivered our baby and she was "just doing her job."  I picked her based on positive recommendations and nothing more.

  • This is a personal choice; I wouldn't.  But, I wouldn't be sending an edible arrangement or flowers to my OB/GYN either.

I think a recommendation and referral is enough.
