I missed a part doing laundry...why did Avery not do the surgery?

I think it was because Arizona wanted a different technique used during the surgery to prevent something happening happing to the lip as the baby grows. She said he's great, but she wanted Sloan to do it because of that.
What happened to the older doctor that was into April but was a jerk to everyone else? Is he still there?
PP is right, but Avery practiced the way she wanted on a pig and did a great job. Avery was all gowned up and ready to start the surgery and she spooked him out of it by saying if he screws it up he will screw up this kid's life forever, he might never get married because he's got a screwy lip, etc. Then she asked if he wanted her to call Sloan. Really low move on her part.
No idea where the other older doctor went. I can't remember his name.

I think motherhood has really changed Arizona in that it makes all the surgeries and cases more personal to her. They showed a little bit of it last week too when she wanted to run and check on the baby
Or maybe she's trying to cut Karev's competition. Or maybe it was a test. If I was about to do a surgery all of the "what if"s would hit me beforehand, but you still have to push through it and do the job.
Glad Cristina and Owen are talking. Their moments were so awkward they were hard to watch.

She's not a 5th-year so I guess since this was 5th-year centered episode they just cut her. She wasn't really in last week's episode either though. Weird.

Is she on maternity leave? I thought she was pregnant again.
Chyler Leigh has not announced any pregnancy. I agree that the episode was focusing exclusively on the 5th year residents, so that is why she wasn't featured. I liked them all together at the end with their drinks and hanging out as a group. Even though the original group has fractured, a new one has formed and they seem to be bonding.
Loved when Cristina realized Teddy didn't know how to do the appy either!

No, Lexi came in as an intern a few seasons in. April is one of the people who came with the merging of Seattle Grace and Mercy West.
Avery is from Mercy West as well.
