We are going to the west coast in February. We are adding LA for a day trip. Any places we should hit?

Yeah, I know. I figure that if we catch the ealiest flight there and the latest flight back we could get a few things in there. I really don't know what is all there. We could probably skip looking at the stars. Really want to catch a basketball game, if there is a season. What are some "must see" things? Friend's husband is from there so he wouldn't care where we decided to go.
Maybe a couple of places to eat and a couple of must see things would work. Sorry i am not too much help.

Knowing that you want to go to a basketball game, I'm going to assume that's your primary destination. First, you definitely want to rent a car in la. You'll want to get tickets for the game at the Staples Center which is where both the Lakers and the Clippers play. It's right in/near downtown so we'll centralize the sights around there.
For sights, there's plenty to see in the general area. You'll want to do some research on The Grove/Farmer's Market, Museum row is near there with LACMA and the La Brea Tar Pit museum which is pretty cool.
For food, I'm not as familiar with the downtown area, but my friend's blog is AMAZING and she knows her stuff when it comes to food. Her blog will have plenty of awesome recs both in and around downtown.
