The latest PETA campaign

Ummmm, what? Indifferent

ETA: I really shouldn't be surprised by this. Thoughts?

Re: The latest PETA campaign

  • I know it's wrong but I kind of find it funny. When I think of someone trying to catch sharks getting attacked by one I can't help but think "well, what did you expect?" I don't think it's right to capitalize off of someone's suffering but I can't help but think "well, that shark showed him." Feel free to flame me. I'm the chick that roots for the bull in bull fights...

But that's not what he was doing. I would definitely think, "That shark showed him" if he was just running around in the water stabbing sharks. lol He was spear fishing...fish.  Spear fishing for food really isn't the same as bull fighting. He did absolutely nothing to the shark other than being in the water with it.

I mistakenly thought the article said he was a shark angler but I do realize that bull fighting and fishing are not the same. I guess I just don't feel as bad for someone who gets attacked by an animal they were trying to kill versus just getting attacked. That may not have been the case here though. I don't necessarily agree with the ad, but it just relates to my initial thought of "that's what you get."

ETA: I'm not a vegetarian by any definition. I eat meat. I realize that many people fish or hunt for their own food and obviously for the food I buy in the grocery store. I'm under no delusions that my food just magically appears. I just can't lie and say I was horrified by the ad.

I'm with you on that! I cheer for the bull too. Wink

Did you know that the bulls are stabbed before they even go into the ring in a traditional bull fight?

I agree with you. It's the ocean, you're spearfishing and I'm sure there's blood all around you, you're taking the risk of getting into with a shark or any other predatory fish. Although, I don't think PETA is accomplishing anything with their scare tactics and shock values. If anything it turns off people even more to their platforms.

ETA: i just changed and reworded a lot of my OP. I'm an idiot. lol

I 100% agree with you. Their tactics are very extreme and they fail to get their message across to a lot of people because of it.

Oh, and yes, I knew that about the bulls. The whole concept disgusts me.

You absolutely accept the risk. In another article the victim says that & says he has zero hard feelings towards sharks. But PETA saying he deserved to be attacked for spear fishing other fish is just sick.

  • Every time I see something like this, it makes me wonder who PETA thinks their target audience is.  Do they not have a PR guy who says "you know, maybe making light of human suffering isn't the best way to win people to our cause"

  • I'm not going to look, b/c it will make me sad, but PETA is a bunch of whackadoos. There are good and bad ways to present your case and push your issue, but they do a horrible job. It's a disservice to those who truly care about animal rights and welfare. Ugh.

There's nothing sad about it like the ASPCA commercials or anything. It a huge shark eating a human w/a caption that says,"Payback's a ***" to try & go against the guy who was just attacked while spear fishing.
