BC: Sarah's Key questions
I'm not sure how many of us read it, but here are some questions I found online. I know Mary read it, so feel free to share your thoughts with me.
1. What did you know about France?s role in World War II?and the V?l d?Hiv round-up in particular?before reading Sarah?s Key? How did this book teach you about, or change your impression of, this important chapter in French history?
2. Sarah?s Key is composed of two interweaving story lines: Sarah?s, in the past, and Julia?s quest in the present day. Did you enjoy the alternating stories and time-frames?
3. Per above: Which ?voice? did you prefer: Sarah?s or Julia?s? Why? Is one more or less authentic than the other? If you could meet either of the two characters, which one would you choose?
4. How does the apartment on la rue de Saintonge unite the past and present action?and all the characters?in Sarah?s Key? In what ways is the apartment a character all its own in?
5. Were you surprised by what you learned about Sarah?s history? Were you satisfied by the end of the book? Who still wants to know?or read?more?
6. What do you think Julia?s life will be like now that she knows the truth about Sarah? What truths do you think she?ll learn about her self?

2. Sarah?s Key is composed of two interweaving story lines: Sarah?s, in the past, and Julia?s quest in the present day. Did you enjoy the alternating stories and time-frames? It confused me at first, but I actually did enjoy the alternating stories in the different time frames. I actually guessed about the apartment before it was revealed and went to Julia's time only. 3. Per above: Which ?voice? did you prefer: Sarah?s or Julia?s? Why? Is one more or less authentic than the other? If you could meet either of the two characters, which one would you choose? Sarah's, I'd prefer to hear the experience from the source itself and also hear her actual account vs a second hand account. I would choose to meet Sarah.
4. How does the apartment on la rue de Saintonge unite the past and present action?and all the characters?in Sarah?s Key? In what ways is the apartment a character all its own in? I also think the apartment was kind of overkill...it just seemed too much of a coincidence that Julia happened to be renovating that apartment while researching for an article on the round-up itself. I tied the two together very early on. I think the apartment could be considered a character b/c of the role it played in both girl's lives- it was the place of heartache and death for Sarah while for Julia it signified the death of her marriage, but the rebirth of her new life.
5. Were you surprised by what you learned about Sarah?s history? Were you satisfied by the end of the book? Who still wants to know?or read?more? Yes and no. I knew she was deeply scarred from the events of the round up and I figured she'd carry the burden of her brother's death, but I'm surprised she didn't reach out for support from her husband and family. It's so sad that she felt she needed to ostrasize (sp?) herself to try to move-on. I almost wonder if the seclusion from her past and nobody in her present knowing about it directly led to her suicide b/c she couldn't live with it all by herself. I was left wanting more with the ending. I didn't like how it ended in the coffee shop with Julia and Sarah's son. She insinuated they might be bonded moving fwd, but does that mean a relationship since they are both now divorced?
6. What do you think Julia?s life will be like now that she knows the truth about Sarah? What truths do you think she?ll learn about her self? I think she'll move on, but always have this story in the back of her mind. I think they main truth she learned was that her marriage wasn't happy.
