learning to knit and/or crochet?

Any recc's on books, dvd's, tutorials to learn to knit or crochet (other than classes b/c the local ones I've looked into don't fit within my schedule)? My memere tried to teach me how to crochet for years and I never was able to get past a single chain...and in knitting I can't seem to get past casting on. TIA.

Start with youtube since it's free. Tons of great videos on there. If one doesn't make sense, try a different one since everyone has a slightly different way of explaining things.

I tried all the books and online videos and tutorials. Honestly I didn't get the knitting until I had someone spend a couple of hours sitting beside me and showing me. Good luck!

Hi. I've been knitting for about 10 years. I think Stitch N *** is the BEST book, to start with. Also, anything by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee (aka the yarn harlot); she writes like she's in the same room with you, and actually talking to you, with a lot of side comments and much humor. Her book, Knitting Rules: The Yarn Harlot's Bag of Knitting Tricks, shows lots of good beginner's stuff. Follow the link: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/124840.Knitting_Rules_

I don't know how to crochet, but I do sorta know how to knit. I taught myself entirely from books and a DVD. The DVD I used is a bit juvenile but it was one of the better ones that my library had. It's called Teen Knit Cafe and It's pretty straight forward for the basics (casting on, knit stitch, purl stitch, binding off) and it really helped me figure out what I was doing wrong (like you I was stuck after casting on and didn't understand the knit-speak used in many of the books I found, and I found that watching someone do it was more helpful than trying to interpret a couple of pics). I saw the DVD at a JoAnn's and it was only like $20 (or you can get it on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/No-Rules-Knitting-Teen-Knit-Cafe/dp/B000RT42I0). The only thing it did not help me with was the pattern I picked to start with (which I was later told by a friend is more difficult than it sounded and she didn't start doing it until like 6 months after learning) which was from Charmed Knits (a Harry Potter pattern book) and was a striped scarf in the round. Best of luck to you - and don't give up (even if it's super tempting)!
