So I have a question for you... feel no obligation  to answer. I saw on Lindsay's post below about how you have those contractions for 8 weeks. I then started to think about your labor that took forever and the potential complications. When you have #2 are you going to stay with  the same doctor/practice? I am not sure I personally could considering the potential risk that Wyatt was exposed to, but I obviously don't know all of the facts. I was just wondering your thoughts :)

  • In all honesty, I'm not sure. I know with 100% certainty that I'm hiring a doula next time to give me another person on my side, but I don't have a lot of options beyond that.

Our town is 3 hours away from the city where I was sent when I went into pre-term labour with Wyatt, and that is also the closest midwife (other than the First Nations ones, but they don't deliver babies off the reserve). There is another town that we're close to that I am going to talk to when we decide to get KU again, but they only have one OB and send most of their patients over to the town I delivered in.

I've talked to my family doctor (he no longer delivers babies), and he told me that in my case, it is standard practice to give me an elective C-section (which I definitely don't want). I think next time I just have to be more adamant about how I want things to go but I've already been told that they would not induce me sooner just because of my experience and that worries me...

I have a lot of anxiety over it. I feel guilty that things went the way that they did and frustrated that my body didn't do it's job. I talk to my friends who had 6 - 12 hour L&Ds that were able to go with next to no drugs and were up and walking without a problem the next day... it drives me crazy to think about it too much lol.

  • Thanks for sharing. I definitely think having another person on your side will be a good thing. Hopefully baby # 2 has a delivery that is a lot smoother!

  • We hired a doula and that was the best decision I have ever made.  She was with me for 35 hours straight and was such a support for me and also Rusty.  She was able to be the liasion between the nurses/doctor and us.  I would HIGHLY recommend everyone hire a doula!  Plus, she kept track of everything for me, wrote the birth story, and took awesome pictures/videos of him being born!

  • this is so good to hear!!! I know a couple people who have had doulas but not from around here. The doula I'm hiring is a family friend and she offered her services to us this time last year, but we opted out because Lance was 'weirded out' by the idea of having someone else coach me through labour.

I told him a few months ago that next time I want to hire her because come day 3 he was doing a piss poor job and I was pretty much useless unless there was a nurse beside me coaching me through it, and he had no energy left either. He told me that there was no way he was comfortable with that and I said 'too bad, YOU are not the one who is in labour'

Did your doula help you before you went into labour? Half of the battle for me next time I think will be trying my damndest to go into labour naturally rather than being induced (since the induction didn't work the first 2 times anyways and I ended up going into labour as soon as I left the damned hospital on day 2)... but of course Wyatt was so big and overdue I'm afraid of the consequences of asking not to be induced... it's a catch 22

  • I second the doula. I love the doula we used with Anders and she's now a good friend of ours. She will be with us during this delivery as well.

Her practice is 2-4 pre-labor visits, as many phone calls as needed, and laboring with you at home/hospital through delivery. She then comes 2 more times post-delivery to check in. This time, we aren't starting "meetings" with her until November since her daughter has heart surgery next week and S is too busy to meet (we opted to wait a bit). She was an excellent resource to me before and during labor (as well as after) and she is a huge reason I was able to go medication free for my L&D. It was a benefit that she is good friends with the midwife who delivered A (random assignment based on the on-call rotation).

Honestly, S loved it-our doula is pretty "natural" but not crunchy, and her goal was to help me through labor, but also to help S help me-teaching him pressure points, massage, etc...When I asked S about hiring a doula again for 2.0 (ours almost wan't available in Decmeber due to family surgeries) he said if Sara couldn't do it, he wanted another doula-as in he felt it was a necessary thing for him as well.

If you choose to go with one, be sure you interview a couple. We loved Sara immediately, and it was solidified when we met with 2 more who just weren't our style (one was very "I'm all about the drugs if you want them" and the other was very pushy and there for mom, not for the couple).

  • Also, re: induction, since I'm a complete hippie......

have you looked into induction by acupuncture? Typically, from what I understand, they start between 39-40 weeks and you go for sessions for 3-5 days in a row.

Also, did you do any chiropractic work with Wyatt? My midwives swear by it for helping to open the pelvis and making L&D shorter. I didn't do it with Anders, but I go weekly now and I feel 100 times better-less pain, easier mobility.

  • I totally agree with everything Meghan said.  Because Stephanie was there, Rusty was able to get some sleep, get food, run home and let the dog out, etc (I was in labor for 33 hours).  We didn't have an option because she is the only doula in my area, but we didn't need to meet with any others.  We hit it off with her right away.  She is also a good friend now!

  • Thank you girls so much for your advice :) I'm pretty sure we'll go with Trudy, although one of my good friends (whose name is also Stephanie lol) does it as well, so we'll have to talk to them both about it.

I called Trudy back in June and said 'I don't know if this makes me crazy, because I'm not pregnant again and probably won't be for at least 6 months but I really need to talk this out'... She was so awesome and explained to me that some of the stuff with Wyatt's delivery didn't need to happen and that there were ways of preventing it (like shoulder dystocia) with exercises prior to labour that the doctors probably wouldn't do because they're not as involved with the labouring as they are with the actual delivery. She made me feel so much calmer and in control even though it was months later lol.

Like I said, maybe I'm just crazy, but whenever I think of all the ways we were so close to losing him I can't help but get really anxious.
