How do I list this on a resume?

I'm helping my H do his resume. He has worked at the same place for the last 15 years. In that time, the business has had 3 different names and he has had 4 different positions.

The positions haven't been in a linear order, though. It's gone like this:

position A - 4 years

position B - 3 years

position A - 3 years

position C - 4 years

position D - 1 year (this was a temporary assignment, but came with a different title and duties)

position C - about a month (present)

What do I do to make sense of this? Positions A and B are lateral, position C and D are a step up from those.

Re: How do I list this on a resume?

  • Are those least recent to most?

I'd list them all, and bullet out duties and accomplishments for each. I'd put them all under the heading of the current company name.

  • So it's ok to repeat the identical jobs with the different date ranges? It just seemed kind of weird.

    Thanks!

  • I would not list the identical jobs twice, rather, I'd list the date ranges. So, for example I'd list

    Job Title A - Company Name - January 2001-February 2004, March 2005-January 2006

That way every gap is accounted for, but it's not directly chronological, so you're not repeating information. Then, I'd be sure to address this in the cover letter with something like, "Working for COMPANY X (also known as COMPANY Y)  since YEAR, I've held a variety of positions, often being asked to change roles and assume leadership positions in multiple departments. This flexibility and blahblahblah traits have made me blahblahblah successful with the company."

  • Is this a company where people in the business would know that the company has gone through a lot of name changes?  I'd probably format it similarly as the PP, but list the former company name on the resume as well, because resumes and cover letters aren't always kept together.  I'd probably also only list one company name change, but you could list all three.

Option #1 could look like this, breaking out each position and the date ranges:
    --------------------------------------
Company XYZ (formerly known as Company ABC)
    Position C, September 2011 - Present, September 2006 - September 2010
     - list of job duties
     - list of job duties

    Position D, September 2010 - September 2011
     - list of job duties
     - list of job duties

    Position A, September 2003 - 2006, September 1996 - 2000
    - list of job duties
    - list of job duties

    Position B, September 2000 - September 2003
    - list of job duties
    - list of job duties
    --------------------------------------

Option #2a - List the company name and date range as one chunk, but without listing each range in each position:
    --------------------------------------
Company XYZ (formerly known as Company ABC)
    September 1996 - present
    Position C
    - list of job duties
    - list of job duties

    Position D
    - list of job duties
    - list of job duties

    Position A
    - list of job duties
    - list of job duties

    Position B
    - list of job duties
    - list of job duties

Option #2b - List the company name and date range as one chunk, and include the number of years, but not the the specific dates:
    --------------------------------------
Company XYZ (formerly known as Company ABC and Company 123)
    September 1996 - present
    Position C (current, 4 years)
    - list of job duties
    - list of job duties

    Position D (1 year)
    - list of job duties
    - list of job duties

    Position A (7 years)
    - list of job duties
    - list of job duties

    Position B (3 years)
    - list of job duties
    - list of job duties

  • Thanks! That's really helpful.

It's unlikely that anyone outside of the local area would know the other names of the company, so I think I'll just ignore that entirely. It's not like it will interfere with their ability to check his references or anything.

The bullets should focus more on data and accomplishments, so I'd focus on that to make them different.
