Movers and cost

Hi, We will be moving out of state, about 800 miles, after the new year and am starting to look into the cost of hiring movers.  Anyone have any experience with good companies to recommend or know an approximate cost of moving a full home?  I have to start calling this month and want a ball park on how much to expect it to cost.

Thanks!

Re: Movers and cost

  • We moved about 600 miles last summer. We looked at all sorts of options. Eventually settled on a uhaul trailer that attached to our truck. Plus 2 other cars loaded down with stuff (we had help moving). Trailer ran us $700 for the weekend. We had a 2 bedroom apartment's worth of furniture.

We also looked at pods, shared semi shipping, and moving trucks. All those options put us well over a grand. Pods were nice but the most expensive. Moving trucks seemed like a good option until we tallied up gas costs (they aren't energy efficient to say the least). Buying shared shipping space in a semi trailer was an option we almost went with (we were looking at about $1200 for it) but timing just didn't work out. We waited too long to book so that might be a worthwhile option. The only part that made me nervous was not being able to control whether it stopped elsewhere to unload other's items/pick up items.

Shop around, there are tons of places out there.

  • We are moving 285 miles, getting a 26' U Haul for $400 and hiring movers here to load it.  They are a $25 fee plus $80 an hour for 2 guys.  DH is going to drive the truck.  Loading is worse than unloading so we are unloading ourselves.

So $400, plus gas, plus $185 movers - will hopefully be around $1k?

  • We had always moved ourselves and the cost was around $1k, but required the most work. Our most recent move my H was away, so I had no choice but to hire movers. This last time, we moved around 800 miles, had a 3+ bedroom house worth of stuff which was estimated around 7500 lbs, and cost about $2700. We packed our own boxes, and the movers disassembled the furniture, and loaded, unloaded, and reassembled the furniture. Most companies will come to your home and provide a "bound" estimate that is guaranteed not to change even if your move weight is significantly more than your estimate. We got estimates from United, Mayflower, and A.Arnold.

  • When you call movers, they will ask you the size of your home / amount of furniture you have. Depending on the company, they may come out to your home to look at everything.

We moved 180 miles away and we got estimates on hiring movers to do the whole thing or using a POD but both of those were really expensive.

We decided to rent a truck and drive it ourselves but hire movers to load and unload. Most of our estimates moving to and from were about $100/hr.

  • If you hire movers for 800 miles.  I would estimate about $7500-$10,000 for full service movers.
