dermatologist? allergist? another Dr?

Good gracious.

Our Dr gave up on Ana. Doesn't know what's wrong with her. Didn't have any next steps for us either. (WTF?)

However, Ana still has a rash, and it's still itchy which is pretty much miserable for her and anyone around her. I worried that this has gone too long and really want some sort of diagnosis so we can fix it. (Not just benadryl.)

Would you go to a dermatologist in this case or an allergist? OR would you just try another Dr?

This is going on 3 weeks of rash. It's not going away any time soon by having a Dr throw their hands in the air and declaring it a mystery.

IF it turns out to be an allergy, could a dermatologist also determine that?

Re: dermatologist? allergist? another Dr?

  • Honestly i would go with an allergist. A dermatolgist will just refer you...they cant do an allergy test. Dh sees one. They also see kids. Its Allergy sinus and somethng...he just has it in its phone as the allergist. 515-226-9559

  • I would see and allergiest or another doctor.   Although the derm may have a solution to clear the rash I assume you want answers on what caused it.

Good Luck, poor Ana must be misserable.

  • I agree that I'd see an allergist if you suspect allergies. If you still have no clue, than a derm could probably help at least diagnose the rash and could then refer you to someone else based on the cause of the problem.

My real issue is that your Dr. should definitely not have punted. That is the general pedi's job, to figure out a diagnosis well enough that he/she can at least get you going in the right direction.  Adam occasionally meets something that stumps him, but he never just gives up.  Often his last ditch effort is to refer to a Dr. named Dr. Elliot, who works at Blank. Dr. Elliot is an older guy who has seen basically everything. He runs a diagnosis clinic where he sees everything in town that is referred to him w/o a known origin.  Usually it deals with things that are more troubling than a rash, like blood in stool, intestinal pain w/o source, etc.  But this rash still sounds very problematic and something that needs to be taken care of. If for nothing else, to know what caused it so you don't have to face it again.

Was it your regular dr. who just gave up, or the NP?  If it was the regular pedi, I honestly probably would look into switching b/c i just don't think that is the proper way to handle the situation. if it wasn't, maybe see if you can get into her again and really make your position known that you want a diagnosis or a referal to someone who can do so.  Your dr. should at least be able to point you in the right direction (derm, allergy, etc.) Plus, with a direct referral from a pedi, you'll probably get in sooner, as specialists can be very hard to see.

This is a busy weekend for us w/ adam's brother's wedding, but when i get a chance i'll ask him for his opinion on the best peds allergist/derm in town.

  • I'm not sure what to suspect anymore.

If it were an allergy to her augmentin I would think it would have gone away, although it started 5 days after her last dose.

If it's a milk allergy then I hope to see some relief in a fews days as I've stopped giving her any cow's milk.

If it's strepB or staph then maybe a derm could help.

The most puzzling thing is that it's not going away after 2 weeks. Not even beginning to fade. There must be a continuous exposure that I haven't thought about or some kind of virus/bacteria that she isn't fighting very well.

The NP originally gave up. I then called our regular pedi and she said she didn't want to step on toes and redo everything that the NP had done. While I respect that, it doesn't result in very good care for my kiddo. I just wanted her to check for things that the NP hadn't or see if she suspected the antibiotic was the problem. She wouldn't agree to help out based again on the whole "stepping on toes" thing. I took Ana to another Dr in Johnston in the Mercy network and she said the same thing. I've been trying really hard to figure it out myself, but I just don't know enough about rashes or what to research to really nail anything down or help her.

I don't want you to bother your DH on a busy weekend. Heaven knows he has his own patients to make him crazy without me contributing.  lol!  Ana has seen Ava Feldman (derm) before whom I respect more than Angeloni in the same practice, but I can't remember the allergist that Katen saw almost three years ago.

As a mom who never cries about anything, this has me at my brink. It's obviously not life threatening, but I want to make sure we're not missing anything that could be, since it's really hanging on and she's so uncomfortable.  I just want her to feel better. She deserves that.
