ever used a professional temp agency?
One of my H's co-workers recommended a couple of professional temp agencies to me. I've been unemployed for about 4 months & the economy is just getting worse. The only time I've used a temp agency was in the summer during college & it was factory work, so I'm having a hard time pushing that image out of my mind.
Has anyone used a professional temp agency - what was your experience like?
Re: ever used a professional temp agency?
I have used them for temp and permanent work. I had great experiences in all the companies I worked for. If I didn't like a job I told them or if something was going on you could tell them. If you use them for permanent work they want to get you the best salary since they get a % of your salary as their fee.
Make sure you aren't paying for their services - the employer will be paying them. If they ask for money up front then they aren't legit.
OfficeTeam is a national organization. I am not sure where you are located but you can google search and get some good hits. They will want you to come in and interview so they know what you represent and they can tell the employer.
Good luck!
I got my job through Appleone
Don't get discouraged if you can't find something through a temp agency, but it's definitely worth going in and interviewing, just in case they do have something for you!
Give it a try. I had good luck with them in the past.
I had good luck with one when I was in college. When I was job hunting this winter I used 2 different ones and they both sucked (the one I got a job from in the past didn't really have anything for me). I would just be really picky and don't be afraid to work with more than 1. One of the major problems I had is they would post jobs online and when I would email about them, they would say they were already filled. But yet they would leave it up for weeks! They try everything to get people in the door. Just be firm with what you want. They would call me with jobs that were way less than what I was making and wouldn't understand why I wouldn't take them. I understand you may be desperate for a job at this point, but don't settle with the first thing they give you. And don't be afraid to speak up.
I also would try to get where you are actually hired on right away rather than temp-to-hire. That was my job and I did the Accounting so I saw what they had to pay this agency. You have to work so many hours and they bill you at 1.5* your pay. So some companies won't pay you as much since they are having to pay this fee to the agency.
When we moved to Alabama (for DH's job) I applied at the temp services that is connected to the university. I put my application in on a Wednesday, got a call that Friday from the director of a department, interviewed that day and started on Monday (this was mid-August). In January I was hired in the position that I was temping for in a permanent capacity (this was back in '08).
I know quite a few people that work here that got their start through the temp agency so it has definitely benefited many people.
Good luck!

I always use agencies or recruiters but it's common in my field.
With the economy tanking though you might need to work with several. I started my current job 6 months ago and had to go through 3 recruiters before I landed a job.
OfficeTeam recruit me for my current job - and it was a direct hire position. I registered with OfficeTeam years, but this is the first that they have been able to place me in a job because my salary range was too high for the jobs they typically get. I lucked out this time as they salary range was very favorable and it was in the field I wanted.
I was unemployed for a few months after graduating grad school. At that point, I didn't really care too much about how much it was or what it involved as long as I was getting paid. I went through a couple of temp agencies before one placed me in a job. Then a permanent job came through a month after I started temping. The permanent job was from something else I applied to and was not from a temp agency placing me somewhere. I was basically waiting for background investigation so I just needed something to hold me over.
My temp position was that of a receptionist and all the agencies I went to were for admin type work. I'm sure you can find them for other things like health, technology, accounting. I don't think they would necessarily put you in a factory unless that's all that's there... Depending on what you are looking for, maybe just try temp positions while still applying elsewhere as that will help bring in money until what the work you want comes in.
