What to pack for Dubai?

I know that you basically need warm/hot weather stuff, but I guess I want to make sure that I'm taking the right kinds of stuff?  For me, it will mostly be about knee-length (because that's what I prefer) skirts and dresses.  Pool wear, I have 3 swimsuits and 3 coverups (I read that they encourage you to wear something while heading to the pool.

Do we need to bring dressier clothes for evening and dinner?  I don't know if we'll do a fancy dinner or anything, but it's possible. (Rec on where to eat? We like to go all out of this stuff, so Michelin is good).  I was reading that people tend to dress up to go out at night.  I am really sure we won't hit up any clubs, or anything like that.  Maybe a lounge or a nice dinner?

H says not to worry-- if we need something, we should buy it there, but I'm a worrier by nature. :)

Re: What to pack for Dubai?

  • Whenever we go out to dinner in Dubai, we usually dress up nice, but not super formal or anything. DH usually wears nice jeans and a button down or a polo. I usually wear nice jeans and a cute top and heels, or a cute dress with sandals or heels if I'm feeling like putting my feet through the pain :) And I agree with your DH, hit up Dubai Mall :)

  • Despite the heat, I pretty much live in jeans. Jeans, t-shirt/cute top, and flip flops/sandals during the day (with a cardigan or pashmina for indoors) and then jeans, dressy top, sandals/heels for evening. Sometimes I'll wear a dress but that's rare since I'm not a dress person.

I'd only bring 2 swimsuits and coverups so you wear one while the other is drying. We just did Thailand and even being in the water everyday I only wore 2 of the 3 I brought. Save the suitcase space for something else! :)

You should bring a dress that can be easily dressed up if you do decide to do something fancy. When I do a fancy brunch, I don't go all out but some women do. You'd fit in either way because there are always people dressed at both ends of the spectrum. So maybe a sundress you can dress up with a pashmina and strappy sandals?

If I were going to visit Dubai for a week my suitcase would look like this:

2 jeans (one regular wash, one dark)
    cargo capris
9 (I like choices) tops of varying dressiness (is that a word?) but mostly plain tees
1 dress or black skinny pants and nice top
    flip flops
    heels (or dressy flats)
    pashmina
    2 cardigans
    pjs
    undergarments
    2 swimsuits
    coverup
    purse to carry on plane
smaller crossbody bag for out and about
    camera
    other electronics with chargers
    toiletries
    sunglasses

I think that's it. And you can obviously change some of that if you prefer to wear skirts and dresses. :)

  • Well damn! That's an awesome list!! Perfect, thanks! :)
  • I think Risa and Jupiter gave good advice! :-)

I'm also a jeans and tee kind of girl, so I'll usually wear jeans on the plane, and pack varying shirts/tanks (to layer). I pack a jacket/sweater/pashmina in my carry on since I know I'll need it for the plane (and the malls).

I will definitely wear a dress to brunch at the Fairmont (probably a maxi dress), and I usually bring a long flowy skirt to throw on in case I don't feel like wearing jeans. Other than that, comfy flip flops and a pair of dressy flats and I'm good to go :-)

And ditto Jupiter...there's always plenty of shopping, with no tax :-)
