talk to me about photo editing
Currently I use Picasa(free) to edit my photos. I hit one handy dandy button that just corrects everything however the program sees fit. Works for me. I have been considering getting some actual software like photoshop, but wonder if I really need it. When I look at a photo off my camera, I couldn't even being to tell you what should be corrected or altered, so would PS be too much for me? Wondering if I should just keep it simple and stick with my free program.
So I am wondering, which photo editing software do you use, even if it is something free like I use, and what are your thoughts on it?
Re: talk to me about photo editing
I use Photoshop CS5.... but only because that is what we have at work and it has been loaded onto my laptop as well.
If you don't see yourself editing many pics (or doing "fancy" edits - anything other than adjusting tones/colors) I say stick with the free programs. Though if you can get Elements that cheap I would be tempted.
Em - I haven't used Gimp, but I have heard really good things about using it to edit.
CRAFTY ME
my read shelf:
I tried to use GIMP and it just wasn't user friendly with my MAC, but it is very similar to PSE you just won't find as much tech support easily with it. There are tutorials out there, but I also didn't have the time to really go out and watch a lot of them. I made the switch to PSE9 recently and LOVE it! I did a free 30 day trial and ended up buying it off Amazon for the $59 Jules quoted just last month. It's $79 with a $20 mail-in rebate.
I'm taking a free Kim Klassen online class right now with PSE9 and it's been quite helpful. For non-serious edits I just use iPhoto, but for my photo shoots I do run them all through PSE9. I think it takes time and practice to learn what should and needs to be edited, if anything, and also some of it has to do with the photographer's taste in photos. Not every photographer edits the same way whether they are a hobbyist or professional.
