BWToddlers: What to do with old bottles

For those who have successfully gotten your kids off of bottles... what did you do with them? I know they can be sanitized and all, but I'm still thinking that we'll want to get fresh, new ones when we have a second kid. Is that crazy?

Did you just pitch them into the trash? I always feel bad throwing stuff like that into the garbage. I googled to see if they're recyclable at all, and found that people use them for a lot of things--but that still doesn't make me want to keep them around! I also read that some animal shelters/battered women's shelters take them.

Just curious what you've done with them. I'm probably overthinking this. :)

Re: BWToddlers: What to do with old bottles

  • We tossed them! I already have too much random stuff in our house so I had no issues just throwing them away. Yeah, it's not super environmentally friendly, but I figure we do plenty of other things that are so it all balanced out.

  • I put the nipples in a ziploc bag and put everything into a plastic bin. Will boil everything when we have another. Will of course inspect the nipples and buy new if needed, but hopefully won't have to.
  • I packed them away and hope to use them again. I sterilized them before packing them up, and will do it again before we use them. I couldn't see throwing them out and buying them again since they're all in good shape. I picked up new nipples for them, but other than that, they were in great shape.
  • I packed them away for future use. If I didn't plan to use them again I would offer them on freecycle or donate to someone who could use them as you mentioned. I would have a hard time throwing them away too if they were still in good shape.

I should add that the ones we threw away were in bad shape. :-)

  • We used the playtex drop-ins so we'll definitely keep them - - but likely toss the nipples.  They've gotten 16 months (and counting) of hard use.....
  • Hmm, OK. I got it into my head that bottles were sort of a "one user" type thing, and didn't think that they were designed to hold up through multiple kids. BUT, now that I see that so many of you have packed them away for future kiddos, maybe we will do the same.

Ours seem kind of grody, but maybe I will try to give them a good hard scrubbing and sterilize, pack them away and call it a day. We can reevaluate them when we're prepping for baby #2 some day!

We'll see if they come clean enough. We only ever had 6-7 bottles, just enough to get us through two days at daycare (had three to use when the other three were in the dishwasher, rinse, repeat), so I would say they took a good beating.

  • We donated Kellen's bottles because we had a few different kinds that didn't get much use while we were trying to figure out what worked best for him. We did keep his Playtex drop-in bottles and used them with Tessa, just replaced the nipples. We had bought Dr. Brown's bottles before Tessa was born, but I hated them and so did she so we just strictly use Playtex Drop-ins now. I will probably donate the Dr. Brown's bottles or give them to my sister depending on what she uses.

Heather, we only had 4 bottles, so I think that's why ours were so gross.

  • We used Drop Ins for Jack, and I think we had a few of the 4oz bottles and a few of the 8oz bottles. I tossed them all and got new ones for Carter. New bottles and new pacifiers were one of the few things we actually bought new for him...pretty much everything else is hand me down from Jack!

We have 4 small and 4 large. The smalls look new still, the large ones don't look new, but as long as they're clean, I don't want to buy more. Unless the little one decides she's not a fan of that brand.

This is what we have also.  Marshall was sleeping through the night early (6 weeks) and from there on out he was on a pretty set eating schedule of every 4 hours...so we needed 4 bottles per day.  I am hoping to re-use these bottles for Baby K but buying new nipples.

  • I had saved all the bottles from Abby but then we ended up using different ones with the twins, so I was annoyed I had bothered saving them!  After we are done with these we are just throwing them away (well recycling them).
