We had parties every year with events until we were teens. My brother and I have summer birthdays, so we would have trampoline parties, chuck e cheese parties, roller skating parties and the year we lived in Florida it was the water park. The older we got my parents would put together scavenger hunts for around the neighborhood.
Winter birthday activities my friends did for their birthdays included ice skating, sledding and/or skiing.
I voted for most years, but not all years. I also have a late February birthday, so pretty much all of my birthday parties were indoors (due to typical eh Feb. weather).
My younger birthdays (1-4 years old) were just family affairs, and I don't think it was ever anything more than a cake and playing with my cousins who are around my age.
Birthdays 5-18 were the "fun" years. Events I remember were renting out the play room at McDonalds and other kid-orientated restaurants/play areas, going to the movies (mom paid for my friends tickets), one year my mom booked a hotel in the "big" city (Bellingham, it was big to a girl from sticks-ville, USA) for me and my 3 BFFs, and then around birthday #14 she started letting me plan my B-day but would provide the funds. Besides the hotel birthday, I don't think my parties ever went over $400.
