No Kill Shelter Vent

A friend of my family just found a stray 2-4 week old kitten in her front bushes.  She took it in but can't keep the kitten for a slew of reasons.  I told her about this no-kill shelter that we got our second cat from.  She called them and they don't take strays.  What the hell kind of shelter is that?!

Re: No Kill Shelter Vent

  • I call BS on your friend. So they only accept surrenders?

  • Whaaaat??

I have never heard of that before.

  • I'm wondering if she misunderstood them because they're website says they have a capacity and to call before bringing an animal to them.

I'd be really upset if they only take surrendered animals.

  • Our Humane Society doesn't take strays.  They only take surrenders or animals that they choose from the animal shelter near by.  It isn't abnormal.  There are quite a few shelters that opperate that way.

  • Does it have a safe surrender room? It's a 24/7 open room with cages to put surrendered animals in, no questions asked except for a little info sheet sometimes.

  • Nope she said they told her they refuse to take strays but she could say it was her animal but then they wouldn't let her adopt for several years.

It's just so sad...that poor kitten doesn't have a good chance.

  • Honestly I thought that's how most no-kill shelters operated, since they end up taking a lot of their animals from SPCA's and other animal shelters that do euthanize.

  • =( I found a stray kitten that was abandoned at my apartment complex once. I called every no-kill shelter within a 50 mile radius and no one would take him. I finally had to just let the apartment managers take him to the humane society and I felt awful. He was a cute kitten so I think he probably found a home. Could  she try to find a good home for him on craigslist?

  • I have heard of a lot of shelters that don't accept or adopt out any kittens/cats during this time of year too because of horrible people doing horrible things to them around Halloween.  That could be where she is running into trouble, and a lot of people discourage putting them on Craigslist for that same reason.

I strongly discourage that.  I'd start by asking the local vets if she can put up a 'found, needs good home' flyer on their bulletin boards.  At least those people are associated with a vet somehow.  Animals on Craigstlist stand the potential of going to companies that test chemicals and cosmetic products.

I would not just give him away for free, but usually I see people request a statement on what kind of home he is going to and why they would be a good family for the kitten, and charge a re-homing fee.

Can she ask someone who does not want pets do the surrender for her?

  • Call a local rescue.  They should take him.

  • I recently took in a little stray kitty that started hanging around my friends house. I was trying to get her into a no-kill shelter, but a ton of them said they only took strays pulled from Animal Control. I don't have the heart to turn her over to AC and cross my fingers she gets pulled, so I have her in my spare bedroom lol.
