Nook vs. Kindle? Your thoughts?

I was hoping to get an iPad but I've got a MacBook air and iPhone so it is hard to justify the expense. But I'd like a reader that has the interwebs too.  There is a good deal on Buy.com today for a refurb color Nook, but I'm not sure which is better - Kindle or Nook.  What's your experience?

Thanks!

Re: Nook vs. Kindle? Your thoughts?

  • I went Kindle, because I love reading outside during the summer, and the Kindle has the eInk that is just like a real book's pages.

Kindle just announce three new models though - a small one, a touch version, and the Fire, which looks sort of like a very inexpensive iPad, so might be worth exploring the different models.  (The Fire doesn't have eInk though, if thats a factor for you)

  • much like the iphone/droid debate, this really comes down to some people like the kindle, some like the nook.

the new kindle looks pretty damn cool. i have the kindle 2 and really like it. i didn't want a backlit screen and like that it looks like the page of a book, easier on my already crappy eyes. i haven't used a nook so i can't really talk comparison.

  • i discovered this weekend that target carries both the nook & kindle in their electronics section.  That way you can test out them both, side by side.

they don't have the new kindles though...those aren't going to be released until nov.

  • The new Kindle Fire looks awesome.  I have the previous generation Kindle, and really like it for reading.  I didn't want the Nook color because I didn't want something backlit.  I assume, but don't know, that the new Kindle Fire is also backlit.
  • I have the classic Nook, with eink. When I got mine, Kindles were not compatible with library books, so I did not consider it. I also knew I wanted eink, not backlit so I did not consider the Nook Color. Nook now comes in a touch-screen, eink version that I wish I'd known was coming before I got mine, but honestly I am happy w/ what I have. At the end of the day, you can read books on any of them, so IMO it comes down to which one is most comfortable for you to hold/use and what extra features you're interested in.
  • I have a Kindle and DH has a Nook.  I loved reading the Kindle outside on the beach with no glare, but at night I wish it could have a back-light option.

DH really likes his Nook because he can surf the web on it a lot easier than the Kindle (I have the basic one) and he likes the back-light, esp. at night.  I love that when he wakes up in the middle of the night he can read without waking me up :)

  • Thanks - good comparisons here. I'm gonna have to test them out so will head to Target - thanks for that rec!  I'm kinda thinking the crappy Wheaton Target won't have both so I'll check out Rockville.
