Anyone have rooms above a garage? how warm/cold are they?

A bit of a random question - but we recently moved into an older home and our bedroom and LO's bedroom are above the garage.  The garage ceiling is finished, but based on the attic insulation and other things we assumed we'd want to re-do the garage ceiling and insulate it better at some point.  Well, the slight cold this weekend is making us reconsider how long we want to wait to insulate - our rooms are COLD! I'm mostly concerned for LO because he can't pile on blankets like we can.

So, if you have rooms above a garage - are they considerably colder than the rest of the house?  Have you done anything that's made a difference?  Do you think I can just insulate the ceiling of the garage or will I need to insulate the whole garage?  Will insulation even help?

TIA for your thoughts, and of course if you had something like this fixed and want to recommend your contractor I'd appreciate it!

  • Our master bedroom is over the garage.  Our garage ceiling is finished, but the walls are not, and oddly I think our room is the warmest in the house.

Weirdly, the nursery is over the living room, where we spend most of our time, and it is FREEZING!  I've tried leaving the vent open, the vent closed, and I cannot seem to regulate the temp in there.  Poor kid is in a onesie, a footie sleeper, and a sleep sack, and I still thought her ears felt cool this morning :(  Might need to just crank the heat and have DH and I suffer.

That's what my LO was in last night too and he seemed ok, but I wonder just how cold it will get when the temps really fall.  I even turned the heat up but I don't think it helped all that much.  I guess we could go around closing all the vents in the other rooms at night so the heat concentrates in our rooms, but that seems like a lot of work :)

  • We haven't noticed any difference in temp but ours is a fairly new construction with a finished garage. We have, however, noticed that you can REALLY hear the garage door open/close from that room so it may be time to look at fixing the door.

I just saw something on DIY last night and they said that belt drive garage door openers are the quietest (but more expensive).  Most are chain or screw drive and they can be loud. Maybe you just need to change the type of opener. GL!

  • We live in a split level and the guest bedroom and part of the master bedroom are both over the garage.  The ceiling in the garage is finished but the walls are cinder block.  The guest room was definitely the coolest in the house last winter.  That said, DH, this spring and summer, full insulated the attic and it's made a world of difference in that room.  It's not nearly as cool as it had been adn feels on par with the rest of the upstairs bedrooms.
  • We recently had this local company do an energy audit on our house because this summer our air conditioner was not keeping up with the heat and it felt like we were losing a lot of energy. I think they charge around $100 for a full home comprehensive energy audit.

After they do the energy audit, they give you a very comprehensive report that explains opportunities for saving energy and money as well as an estimated savings per year. If you need certain services done (like we needed insulation in our attic and basement), they recommend companies to do the work and give you a price estimate. I was super impressed with their services.

  • We have a split level (built in 1978) and all the bedrooms are above the garage (2.5 car garage).  I find those rooms to be the coldest in the entire house.  You can walk down the hallway and literally feel the temperature drop.  It's about 8 degrees colder in winter.

We need to get more insulation between the garage and the bedrooms just haven't yet.  One thing we are going to do is replace the garage doors with ones that are insulated and that should help out a ton.
