Question on working in UK

we are in the *very* early stages of thinking of moving back to the UK.....like at least 2-3 years out sort of thing.  It wouldn't be a permanent move, but we'd like to live there for at 3-4 years most likely

DH and the kids are dual citizens (US and UK), but I am not. I do however work for a large company that has branch offices in the UK.  I already telecommute full time to our office in Virginia so working remotely wouldn't be an issue.  But I know I'll need some sort of visa/residency paperwork to live in England....I'm assuming it would be easier if I have a job but has anyone done something similar with moving overseas and working for a US based company?  Any tips on things to think about as we start the process?

Last time I lived there I was on a student visa, I've not lived overseas while working.

Re: Question on working in UK

  • If you are married, you will have to have a visa, but you will hve no problems working - or getting the visa. I'm nto sure if you can jump straight to ILR (a perm one) or not. (Tofu will know.)

  • Welcome!

I agree you should not have an issue with your visa due to your H.  You will have to get entry clearance from the US and it will cost you a pretty penny think about $1500 just so you know and can save if you need to.  I could be wrong with the prices depending on what you need, ask Tofu, but it's not cheap.

When are you moving?  How old are your kids?  Where will you live?

  • You will get an ILR if you have been married for over two years.  On it you will be able to work.  What you need to do is go to this website and it will tell you exactly what to do...good luck!

  • Thanks everyone!

We have no idea when we'll move. DH just finished his PhD and has a new job so it'll be awhile but we definitely plan for him to have a sabbatical year over there when he's eligible.  The kids are 2 and 4 now, we were thinking when they were around 6-8 would be a good age....before the drama of middle school hormones, etc.  We've debated living overseas longer term, it really just depends on where DH's career goes since mine is so mobile/portable.

We've been married for 8 years so I was hoping getting a visa would be easy for me, I figured it was worth doing some leg-work early to see what the process would be before we even aim for a date/year sort of thing.
