Des Moines metro area school districts

Hello! My husband and I are planning to move to the Des Moines metro area this spring. I am trying to decide for sure what school district we want our kiddos to be in. I am thinking Waukee but would like opinions of others. Thanks!

Re: Des Moines metro area school districts

  • Waukee is large and growing as is Ankeny.. WDM is already huge.. I wouldn't send my kids to DSM schools because I feel like the educational quality is marginal.. We are sending our kids to Urbandale but would have been okay with Johnston, Waukee, or WDM.. Urbandale just has a better class size (like 250 instead of 400-600 like some of the other school districts I mentioned).

  • We're in the Johnston School district and like what it has to offer. It's getting large as well but it will be forced to expand before my kids get to high school so I feel better about that.

Waukee is well known for its sports if that's a factor. As is West Des Moines (Valley)

  • I think you can get a good education at any of the area suburban schools. The choice just comes down to where you want to live and class size. We currently live in Des Moines but plan to move to the suburbs soon. I don't have much confidence in the Des Moines public school district but I am very happy with the private school we are sending our daughter to for preschool right now.

  • We live in DSM right now, if we're still in DSM by the time El is ready for school she will be going to Christ the King. Or Jefferson Elementary if we were able to get in.

If I get my way, and we're out on the farm, then Ella will eigther go to Indianola or Norwalk, depending on the district we're in.

I think SoutEast Polk is a great school, although it's growing pretty fast. I'd rather her go there than Valley.

  • There is some helpful information -- including the ability to do comparisons between systems -- at this site:

  • Our family moved here back in November from NJ. Our son won't be ready for school for a few more years, so we chose to first rent so that we could get used to the area and decide where to buy/build.

I don't know if you have other factors. We originally wanted to move into DM proper due to diversity (around the Greenwood Elementary school). There are good schools in the DM district but you have to do your research and of course, often times better schools come with homes in a higher price point. We just couldn't find a home we liked.

In the end, even though the suburbs lack diversity significantly we decided to build in Urbandale because we wanted a home design/layout that no price point in the area could offer us. And there is little land available for building in the proper city.
