Tax on Saturated Fats in Denmark

Just read on NPR that Denmark is now taxing saturated fats such as oils and butter: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2011/10/03/141014592/denmark-taxes-butter-and-fat-but-will-it-work?sc=fb&cc=fp.

Thoughts on this? Will it work to curb obesity? Are folks going to sneak to Sweden to buy their butter (Lorry? Snippy?)?

Re: Tax on Saturated Fats in Denmark

  • Just another way to oppress the Greeks, Italians, and Spaniards (oils)!

Kidding, but in all seriousness, raises interesting questions in terms of EU "free trade"-- i.e. "we're not TAXING your imports, we're just taxing FAT/UNHEALTHY sh!t, which costs our healthcare system millions..."

Interesting tact.  Although, maybe I'm cynical and it really is a health thing, but I've gotta wonder for my poor, abused Mediterranean compatriots!

  • I didn't read the full article, will there be a tax on butter/oils or on any product containing saturated fats?

It says 'a 16 Kroner (about $3 U.S.) tax on every kilogram of saturated fat as a way to discourage poor eating habits and raise revenue, we were left scratching our heads.'

But it only really mentions butter and oil.

  • Honestly, I think it's silly. Not everything containing saturated fat is bad, especially in moderation (think whole milk for kids, etc). A junk food tax, I'm fine with; or a fast food tax. But just taxing saturated fats and leaving all the other crap alone--chips, candy, etc are often saturated-fat free--isn't going to help much of anything.
  • Might a better approach be to subsidize foods that are actually good for you?
  • If I'm wrong, somebody please correct me, but I was always taught saturated fat was solid at room temps.  How are they including oils under this umbrella?

  • It's stupid. Health and healthy food aren't as simple as Denmark wants it to be. This isn't the first ridic law about food here and I doubt it will be the last, but Danes just put up with it. I highly doubt there will be a butter smuggling ring from Sweden or anything like that, because that would require a far higher level of caring about it than anyone here has.

Ha! I love it. In my head, I figured there could be a beer-for-butter exchange between the Swedes and Danes. :)

Maybe Snippy and I could go into business together. ;)

  • DH just saw a TV report about the tax.  Here is what he said:

"A tax on foods that are high in FAT? Do you guys want me to be skinny for the rest of my life?  This is...it's....racism against skinny people!"

Clearly he meant "discrimination," but I still found it hilarious :)
