Ideas to make house smell good?

What have you guys used to make a house smell good when you walk into it??  I have tried wallflower plug in's, yankee candles and scentsy.  Everything smells good for a few days and then the smell goes away, it could be me getting used to the smell.  Just thought i would see what other suggestions you may have.  Thanks for you help!

Re: Ideas to make house smell good?

  • I think you are definitely getting used to the smells.  People will comment on how nice our upstairs smells and I don't really notice it, but we just have a plug in in the hallway.  If you have plug ins and you keep them refilled your house should smell good to anyone who visits (as long as there is not an overbearing offensive odor you are trying to cover up).

  • I swear by Febreze candles. I've never found anything else to work as well.
  • I swear by Glade Candles.  Wow.

I love the smell of french vanilla...and its so strong/good that it can only burn for a 1/2 hour and the smell lasts all day!

  • I usually boil cinnamon sticks and/or cloves if I've done something stinky in the kitchen and can't open the windows.  There are other things you can boil like lemon and orange peels, rosemary, etc. that can change it up.  Otherwise, I don't really want my house to have an overwhelming smell.  I prefer a fresh air smell.  I try to avoid synthetic fragrances in my home and cosmetics as much as I can because I'm suspicious of the health effects.

I do think we become immune to our house smells pretty quickly.  Make sure you aren't in an arms race with your nose :)  You might suffocate your guests.

  • I normally try just to leave our windows open as much as possible and use candles as necessary.  If I leave the place closed off for too long it starts feeling stale to me, even if it doesn't actually smell bad.

  • Make sure your house is clean so there are no bad/germy smells lurking around. I also will pick up a variety of flowers to put around the house when I find a deal.  I love the scent that fresh flowers add plus they are really pretty.

I agree. I don't use a lot of fragrances because they give me headaches and the smells bother me after a while. I like to open up my windows periodically to get that "fresh air smell" inside. Also, ditto on boiling cinnamon sticks and citrus fruit peels. Otherwise, I periodically will burn a soy candle (cinnamon and brown sugar scented).

  • I like the scentsy so far.  I run it for at least an hour each day.  So then the scent lingers for the rest of the night and into the next day.  Trying to remember to refill a wall flower or an airwick wall plug for all the outlets is just a hassle and I forget when I originally put them in.  My scentsy warmer is on my kitchen bar area and I just turn it on when I have to put my lunch tupperware in the sink.
  • I tried the wall flowers but I felt like after a few days you couldn't smell them...even though there would still be liquid in them.

I use the Febreeze dual scent plug ins. Right now we're using the caramel apple one. I love it!

In the bathroom we have a Glade solid freshner. I'm not crazy about it but it's out of sight.

In the kitchen by the trashcan we have a foldable container for the pup's toys. I have a Scentportable from B&BW attached to the container. I have another one of those in my car. I love those too...they're just better in more confined spaces IMO.

  • We keep the windows open a bit during the warmer months. I'll boil cinnamon or a little vanilla in water to create a natural freshener. Synthetic wise, I love the febreeze candles and burn them on occasion.

  • I love good smells too, but I'm sure those chemicals are awful. I found this idea on Pinterest. I am trying it now, and it seems to go away after a few days, but I think it's because the oil is old.

  • Tons of ideas here:

I personally love the Mrs. Meyers products - but there are great ideas for every scent preference.

  • Honestly, I don't like when people try and make their homes smell "good" with artificial scents like plug-ins or sprays. Just clean with Pine Sol, vinegar, etc., keep windows open and dust-free and you're good to go.

I think if the house is clean, it's fine. If you want to light a candle for a particular scent, go for it (I have one going right now), but if it's to mask something it makes it even worse. Then it's like flowery fish - which is worse than plain old fish.

  • I remeber reading something about put oils (cinnamon or pepperment) in your vents for AC/heat.  Put the oils in a milk cap or something else small.  I think it also said about cinnamon sticks too.  The scent is supose to spread through the vents when when the AC/heat is running.  Sorry not much help...Good Luck!!!
  • OK, so I found a tutorial on Pinterest where you use an empty scent bulb from a Wallflower & refill it with water and essential oil: http://holycrickey.tumblr.com/ (you have to scroll down a little bit to get to it)

I just tried it using peppermint oil (about $8 for the bottle and I didn't use all of it) and it literally made my house smell like it was full of candy canes; I loooove having really strong scents that I can smell whenever I walk in, and this did the trick :) I think next time I'm going to try lemon or orange!

I may be just a worry-wart, but I have heard way too many stories of house fires from plug-ins getting too hot and catching fire. I'm not saying I don't use them, because I have 3 of them throughout my home. I just feel a little uneasy refilling them like that because the stuff in the wallflowers you buy are formulated to be used in that warmer.

  • I personally like the reed diffusers.  Those smell good for several months.  The ones from Pier 1 are the best; nice blend of price and quality.

  • I am not a fan of the synthetics. I boil cinnamon, eat an orange or will bake a small  apple pie.

  • I like room fragrance b/c I feel like sometimes diffusers and plug ins don't smell after a few days.  I use the ones from a company called Tipton Charles b/c you can also use them as linen sprays and body sprays. I love to spray the bed linens with the Ocean one.

You can buy them here www.newyorksoap.com
