Can anyone explain to me why Mac got so fat? Was that just for the show or what? Did they have an explanation in the show at all?

Both-
He gained weight in order to turn his fat into muscle mass, it's the only way to be the ultimate ninja fighter
AND he obviously gained it in real life just for the show.

He gained the weight in real life on purpose because he thought it'd make a funny storyline.
He's married to Sweet Dee IRL and in one of the behind-the-scenes promos she said that they were talking about it and she told him, "You know, everyone's just going to think that you just let yourself get fat and then we were forced to write it into the show" and he apparently thought that was really funny. She seemed sort of disgusted by the whole thing :P
It's funny/sad to watch older seasons and see how big of a difference this made. The weight also makes him look a lot older!

And for as big a deal they make about Dennis being the attractive one, I think Mac (thinner Mac :P) and Charlie are better-looking than him. Charlie might actually be the cutest for me.
Frank's turned into a nut lately. We were watching an episode from the season where he first joined the show (season 2, maybe?) and he's a completely different character. He was always up to some scheme, but now he's just gone insane.
