Houston Nestie needs help!

Hi there, hope you guys don't mind me popping over for a few questions.

My 5 yr. old daughter has been begging to go to NYC and my DH and I were thinking of taking her around Christmastime.

Would it be totally, insanely crowded to go around Dec. 26-30?

Where would you stay (moderately priced, say $300-400 a night) if you wanted to do all the fun kid-appropriate stuff like ice skating at Rockefeller Center, American Girls Store and such.

Any advice & recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

(FWIW, none of us have ever been to NYC so any general travel tips would also be appreciated)

  • Ditto checking the sticky!

Also, NYC is insanely crowded during that time, but it's for a reason.  Christmas in NY is like no where else in the world!  Just expect the crowds and try to do things in "off times" - for example, my husband's sister was visiting us from out of town, and we decided to take her to see the Roc Center tree on a Saturday evening in December.  BAD idea.  We literally we swept along in a sea of tourists, we couldn't even stop to take a picture and had to duck into a store (Lord and Taylor, I think?) to get away from the crowds.  But a week night, or earlier in the evening, would probably have been better.

I don't know much about the kid shopping in NYC, but it's really easy to blow $200 a day in NYC and not have much to show for it!

  • Mrs. Kocal is correct, it is madness around Xmas!! But it's gorgeous!!

I used to work in Midtown, right in the Rockefeller area. There are quite a few hotels in the area, but i'm not sure how much they are...could be expensive, especially around Xmas. And i agree about trying to go/see stuff at off-times. I love walking up one side of 5th Ave and then down the other to look at all the designer stores holiday windows. You should then end up at the Rock Center Xmas tree. Plus, the American Girl store is on 5th Ave.

It'll all be crazy but you'll have a fantastic time!!

  • Thank you ladies for your comments!

We are going right after Christmas, and during the week, not on the weekend so hopefully that'll help.

    I'm excited!
